I want to know how far will administrators go to get respect from students? Recently at my high school a hispanic boy was suspended for wearing his country's flag on his bookbag during Hispanic Heritage Month. They simply told him that his flag was causing a disruption in school (which it wasnt everyone had been wearing their flags at the time)and that he was to immedietly take it off, when he refused he was suspended. There has been many hurtful and discimative things said by students attending Freedom High school about this issue and the administrators have yet to address the students aplogizing or explaining what really happened. If anything this whole thing (that wouldnt have happened if administrators weren't in need of respect) was a disruption!!

Of course there's freedom for us in high school, if we're doing something that they doesn't like then you got to stand up for it to show that we're good as them and also it's our choice to choose whatever we want but sometimes breaking rules can be good because we're not all perfect you know, people got to stand up if they have to and doing their own thing. I have my freedom in high school, believe me i do because sometimes you can't do what teacher tells you, it's like they want to control you thats why im doing my own thing in school and being myself not like those goody-two-shoes always following would turn out to be stupider than they think. Of all people that would want to take away our freedom because they want everything their way, it's much better if we all do our own thing and listen at the same time, that's fair enough. there are detetions for good reasons like being late and whatever rubbish, that's fine but clothes and hairstyles, bags, jewellery ain't getting banned for good reasons, it's because we want to be ourselves, so be it. speak out and be yourself, don't always follow because we got to break rules sometimes. everyone has a right to wear the flag or a jumper that's not allowed in school, so what! so what the problem eh? i don't see any problems that we can have flag or whatever on us if we want, that's not aganist the law isn't it?

I think thats's really wrong because i'm a hispanic female myself and i represent my culture all the time especially during hispanic heritage month i've never been in a school where they told me i couldn't wear my flag maybe because all of my schools have been diverse but thats wrong and the thing with the pink shirts thats everywhere because of the gangs and the everyone wants to be a thug thing thats going on but what if someone did that for a special cause or something like with the bracelets that you can get for a dollar or wear red day and all of that so there just being hypocrits if a highschool student did that without permission because they couldnt get an advisor or representative and they did it themselves they'd be wrong so we have certain freedoms up until we make the adults look wrong

I'm lucky to go to a school that isn't as selfish as most schools are. Most school administrators are so afraid that they will be hurt that they'll endanger anyone else to be safe. And seriously admin. should not be worried with themselves children should always come first in school.

When a bunch of guys in my school started wearing pastel pink shirts to school, the administrators went crazy they thought there was a pink gang in the school so they banned pink from the guys (it only lasted one day, everyone protested, like it would make a difference anyway) any way it was just a fad, but then you got punished if you were wearing pink"in groups". funny how administrators react.

At my school there have been similar problems of punishments being dealt out for wearing items involving cultural beliefs. I personally think they shouldn't have the power to do so unless it is having a detrimental effect on the educational flow. It only seems to disrupt the educational environment when these administrators go and say something. If, in fact, it was causing harrassing, defamtory, vulgar, etc, remarks to be made, then yes, perhaps it should be taken off so the learning day can go on. But if nothing has happened except an administrator getting fiesty because they personally don't agree with the symbol, well, nothing should be done to the student in that situation, and said student should be allowed to wear the symbol of their culture and what not as they please. Off on a slight tangent here, I personally don't understand the idea behind expressing your culture through a symbol. Granted, people can do whatever the hell they please, but is it really necessary? If you wear a flag from Country X, what are you accomplishing? Hell, look at it this way. Say you're wearing a shirt promoting (insert race here) culture. Why is that necessary? If people want racism and related sentiments to stop, the first step is to stop distinguishing. By distinguishing, you are in essence discriminating and pointing out differences that need not be pointed out, if a level of equality is trying to be achieved. Ahem. Ranted there a bit.

I think we should all be proud of our heritage, but I notice some people put some sort of mark becuse of having some sort of heritage. Like black people must act ghetto, Hispanics are stupid and *****, white people are classy and stuff, it's just annoying.

Why does it seem that there is more racism in the world than there was 10 years ago? it seems like all of the sudden everyone who is of another race has something against showing pride in where someone is from. Maybe they should spend some time on respect!

dude that's pretty twisted. if he's hispanic, he has every right to wear his flag (especially if everyone else is). at my school, one time, we were having a high school night anf this guy i know walked in, and his belt buckle had the confederate flag on it. now i know this sounds like a "so what?" to alot of people, but i'm forgetting more people atttend public schools than private. i for one, attend a private, catholic high school, and alot of the faculty that saw it just laughed. in fact, he'll walk around during the school day with that on his belt. it's just weird. steph

Yeah, so do I. That's horrible that he wasn't allowed to celebrate his heritage. Our school allows you to wear pretty much what you want, as long as it follows dress code and isn't offensive to anyone's race or creed. That doesn't prevent students from being mean to people who wear something that signifies an ideal that they don't agree with--gay pride clothing, and things for religions other than Christian. So at my school, it's more the students being discriminatory than the administration.

Our school is pretty leniant and will let us wear whatever we want to. Well, as long as certain things are covered. Anyway, I just found it ironic that your school's name was Freedom High.
