I tried taking a year of Spanish and sucked at it. The problem was that I could never reach the level of mastery that I have in English. It's frusterating to not be able to express yourself properly.
Still, I managed to get into a college despite only having one year of a language. What's more I'm not even required to take the usual two years of a language at the college because my major will have me taking upper level mathematics courses which satisfy the language requirements.
Not like I wouldn't like to know another language like Japanese or Arabic. I know at least a couple of words in over ten languages. Actually, come to think of it, I know Spanish better than most of my friends who had two years.

I speak English, a bit of French and am attempting to teach myself some Japanese. I'm trying desperately to learm French fluently, but i have no one to speak it with, so I lose my touch and forget a lot of the basics. And my school only offers French, Spanish and Italian and I only know 1 person who speak Japanese, and she lives in a different state u.u'' If anyone speak Japanese, e-mail me! ...pleeze!!!!! ^_^

I am one of those people who is okay at many things but excels at none. I speak English, took two years of high school Spanish and did very well, though I haven't had occassion to keep up my skills, took a semester of Latin, which I'm continuing this fall, I know a little sign language, and my friends speak something that doesn't count as a different language I guess, it's more of a general manipulation of English so few people can understand us. Other than that it's just a few sentences in German. At least I'm pretty sure that's all of it.

I speak english, spanish, and a little bit of Korean they make us learn at Tae Kwon Do, but I eventually want to speak at least 7 languages fluently. That was just a random fact. I know some people who grew up speaking two or more languages at home and it is so cool. I just wish my school had better options for foreign languages. The bigger high schools in my area have cool languages like Cantonese and stuff like that.

quote: the only reason i would take a language is because i need it for college. Unfortuantely im stuck with German or Spanish. we used to have French but the teacher left. i guess i wouldnt mind learning French. its really cool hearing people who speak it fluently. but well its never gonna happen. and i would never take it because well of their political stances. but then again i shouldnt be taking spanish or german either. im gonna take german.
with your ever-growing hispanic population, spanish would be 100% more useful than german

I think learning other languages is extremely important! It's nice to be able to communicate with people from all over the world. I speak Spanish, Catalan, French, English, and am learning Italian.

Well, I speak Spanish and German becuase that's what most of my family speaks. (Mom's side: Spanish; Dad's side: German) The language I'm best at is obviously English, so I fluently speak 3 languages. (FYI: if you deciding between learning German or Spanish, I'd say that German is harder to learn becuase it is harder to speak and the grammar is so much harder. Plus, Spanish sounds much more romantic. ) During the new school year, I'm studying French; I'm also trying to learn sign language and Italian in my free time. If anyone speaks any of these, mail me or somehting on YN.

i speak english, filipino and i would like to learn more. I think most Americans speak well but when it comes to writing, they misspelled words even if they speak it perfectly... I have noticed this coz i have friends who are from the US..but anyway, its ok.. i have no grudge against that... I was merely pointing out a fact.
