i know what you mean.. shows like the oc or laguna beach drive me crazy. i know some girls are naturally twigs, and good for them. but i'm not. i'm an average weight. i have curves. and most of the time i feel good about that. but heaven knows that when i turn on the tv and see skinny actresses in bikinis, i feel bad.

guys don't get off the hook completely. why are all the larger guys cast as the "funny, slighly stupid, but lovable" characters? i want to see a protagonist who's smart, charming, and without the washboard abs!

It's a chicken-and-egg type thing. Women, in general, care more about beauty and beauty products because the media targets women because women, in general, care more about beauty and beauty products.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that the media is trying to make you feel ugly; the media just wants you to know you could be "more beautiful." Yes, the endless stream of beauty products is horribly overblown (I'm pretty sure 98% of them don't do anything, but then again, I'm also a guy and pretty sure conditioner doesn't do anything), but like you said, there's nothing wrong with wanting to feel and look your best. If you interpret a pretty face on your TV screen as an assault on your appearance, you probably do have some complex self-esteem issues, and you need to work on developing coping skills.

Unfortunately, choosing to ignore the media is impossible. You can limit yourself to what you think won't upset you, but there will always be exposure to a standard of beauty it is difficult if not impossible for the average person to meet.

Amen. While the media is constantly telling us to be impossibly beautiful, parts of it also seem to be reminding us that real women have curves, only bimbos wear makeup, and if you're thin you must not only be anorexic, but a horrible person as well. You just can't win.

And then, as the books were told, Fina replied: "A can of worms, my dear friend? What has this to do with reason?"

The media is not deliberately trying to make anyone feel ugly. YOU CHOOSE to watch whatever it is you're watching and you choose to let it affect you. You can ignore it, you know.

I agree with palaver. Never pay attention to the media when there talking about celebritys. Its like watching a show on god. It makes you want to be like them. And the problem is, that these people in the media are in the media because, negatively put; there everything you wish you were, but probably shouldn't be.

The reason why you probably shouldnt be what they are; rich, famous, and popular ect.
is because, the typical person, couldnt and wouldnt remain or stay healthy if they lived in an enviroment or if they lived life like a star would.

Ok? get it now? Kapeesh. lol.

It ends when you become wise enough not to pay attention to the media. By the time that happens, age will do to your body what genetics had no heart to do.

It happens early for males too. Just examine the status system that takes shape in school. You might see patterns regarding physical characteristics.
