Music is one of my very favorite things, especially classic rock, nu-rock, and punk-rock music. Sadly, my boyfriend only knows of a few groups here and there (mostly Christian rock and some rap like 50 cent). He believes music is solely what we play in band class. To this I say, "tsk, tsk." I asked him if he knew who Motley Crue, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, and Led Zepplin was. He didn't have a clue. Well, he knew AC/DC had a song called "Back in Black" only because we played it in band as a stands tune this year. I was horrified, to say the least. I vowed to give him a solid history of classic rock and later on inform of punk-rock (like the Clash and the Ramones) and even some of the nu-metal/rock stuff out like my favorite band, Linkin Park. Here is a list of bands that I'm going to teach him about in his classic rock lesson. I couldn't think of anyone else. Tell me if I have left anyone crucial off: - AC/DC
- Aerosmith
- Alice Cooper
- Black Crowes, The
- Black Sabbath (Ozzy Osbourne)
- Blondie
- Blue Oyster Cult
- Bread
- Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young
- Cult, The
- Deep Purple
- Def Leppard
- Eagles, The
- Fleetwood Mac (Stevie Nicks)
- Foghat
- George Thorogood and the Destroyers
- Grateful Dead, The
- Guns n' Roses (Axl Rose)
- Heart
- Jackyl
- Janis Joplin
- Jethro Tull
- Jimi Hendrix
- Joan Baez
- Judas Priest
- Kiss
- Led Zepplin
- Lynard Skynard
- Molly Hatchet
- Motley Crue (Vince Neil)
- Pantera
- Pink Floyd
- Poison
- Queen
- Rob Zombie
- Rolling Stones, The
- Rush
- Scorpions
- Styx, The
- Ted Nugent
- Thin Lizzy
- Twisted Sister
- Van Halen (David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar)
- W.A.S.P.
- Who, The
- ZZ Top

You should really read previous posts before you yell at me in anger. The Beatles have already been mentioned. I did not forget them; I chose to leave them off. I don't think they fit the category. I may change my mind later on. I'm going to add the Cure (also, previously mentioned). And Bruce Springsteen? Ick.

Well, maybe Bob Dylan. But not Bob Marley. I love him and all but he's definitely classified as Jamaican reggae. Perhaps I will add Eric Clapton and James Taylor. I really need to start working on this more! finn, thanks for the punk rock bands. Very helpful. I know some but not nearly as much as I know about classic rock.

The only thing I could really help with is punk, and for that I'd recommend - Black Flag - The Circle Jerks - The Descendents - The Germs - The Weirdos - T.S.O.L - Dead Kennedys - Bad Brains - Minor Threat - Bad Religion - Operation Ivy - US Bombs - Flipper - SNFU - The Misfits - NOFX - Subhumans - The D***ies

The bands I listed would go with the classic rock bands, bands made in the 60's and 70's some 80s. SIMPLE PLAN SUCKS!!!!!!!!! Listen to Fugazi then listen to simple plan.

Hold up, people. Did not a single one of you read in my post that I said I was going to have a separate list for newer bands? Metallica and Nirvana will be included in the newer rock list. Incubus is old (probably about the same level as Metallica) but not nearly 25-35 years old! Smashing Pumpkins will fit with Nirvana and the garage rock era. Like I said, I haven't heard of Bauhaus---that doesn't make them unimportant! Simple Plan will not be included in anything. Get a life. I hate U2. I'm like the only one but I do.

Not Simple Plan. I don't think anybody realizes how old Incubus is, they at least deserve consideration, same with Modest Mouse. People only remember them from their newest albums but they have been around for a long time. I must agree with Bauhaus that Depeche Mode is a bit more electronic, but its still rock. Bauhaus is classic, I don't see how you can ignore them, they are just as old as The Cure, and definitely rock. I can go without Tool, they aren't as classic now that I think about it, but I would consider U2. Another one I remembered: The Smashing Pumpkins, they are a must.

I could be wrong about these two but what about Bob Dylan and Simple Plan? I know for sure-Metallica, Nirvana, U2(possibly).

Wow... I haven't even heard of a couple of these bands...I guess I'll be teaching myself a little as well. I considered Nirvana. They're in the grunge/garage rock era and definitely important (one of my favorite bands) but you're right, not as classic as AC/DC. I may add them because they wouldn't fit in a punk-rock or a nu-metal category either. Same goes for Metallica: Not as classic as some of the other bands but not as new as some of the nu-metal bands. I may add them as well. I'm definitely adding The Cure (can't believe I forgot them), the Yardbirds, and maybe Morrissey (I've heard of but never listened to). I'm not sure about Depeche Mode either (again, heard of but never listened to). I've never heard of Bauhaus, America, or Love. Incubus and Tool belong with the new bands.

You cannot forget Metallica. And you also left out The Cure and Morrissey, to forget them would be a travesty. And Bauhaus, Depeche Mode, Incubus, and maybe even Tool.

They're not as "classic" as AC/DC, but they were around the era of other mentioned artists, and definitely made an impact on the rock music world.
