Out of boredom this summer, I'm taking advantage of living in a liberal university area where the library has almost anything you want. I'm looking for non-American-made movies, so if you have suggestions of good ones, please let me know.

What I've seen:
Bella Marta
Julio y su ángel
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Amélie
Volver
Y tu mamá, también
Belle Epoque
*Jeux d'enfants (Love Me If You Dare)
*L'Auberge espagnole

*I have these movies in queue already.

"Goodbye Lenin" was great.
German-made, about a family during the time the "wall" fell.

My two favourites are Jean de Florette and the sequel Manon du Source. They take place in South France, and well, they're very good films portraying the hard lifestyle of farming in that area, which is very dry all year around, and it has a good plot, too. I'm not very good at advertising movies, but I loved them, and I wish I could find copies for myself to see them again.

Also, Jenos and I watched Nightwatch, which is a Russian film. Though, if you can't understand fantasy stories, don't watch it. It follows up with Daywatch and Twilightwatch. The fourth book Finalwatch hasn't been made into a movie. Watch it with subtitles; it's way better that way.

Die Fälscher
A German film that translates to "The Counterfieters" It's a true story about one of the many counterfeiting sequences set up by the Nazis in 1936. It's a good film that questions one's morals.

I don't know if you'll find it on dvd yet, but I did see it with my dad a couple of months ago and it was very good.

The Last King of Scotland

Another true story (I think this one is British) based on the brutal Ugandan dictator, Idi Amin seen in the eyes of a young naive physician from Scotland. It took place sometime around the 1970s. It is, at times, shockingly real and disturbing, but over all an amazing film.

I've seen Snatch. I forgot it was British.

Haven't seen Pan's yet, though.

The Seventh Seal
Exhausted and disillusioned, a medieval knight (Max von Sydow) makes the journey home after years of combat in the Crusades. When the black-robed figure of Death confronts him, the knight challenges him to a game of chess. A powerful meditation on the existence of God and the meaning of life, this drama is considered one of Ingmar Bergman's best and took the Cannes Film Festival Prize in 1957.

Seven Samurai
Akira Kurosawa's heroic tale of honor and duty begins with master samurai Kambei (Takashi Shimura) posing as a monk to save a kidnapped child. Impressed by his bravery, a group of farmers begs him to defend their village from encroaching bandits. Kambei agrees and assembles a group of six other samurai, and together they build a militia with the villagers while the bandits loom nearby. Soon the raids begin, culminating in a bloody battle.

If British is non-American enough for you, Snatch and Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels are good too.

Also, seconding Pan's Labyrinth if you haven't seen it yet. It wasn't quite what I was expecting, but it was awesome nonetheless.

Okay, here are a couple more recommendations.

City of God

It is in Portuguese, but there are English subtitles(if you can live with that). Also, it's rated R, so just giving a warning.

I was going to recommend Pan's Labyrinth but I think you've already seen it. If not, it's a very interesting story. It is also Rated R and it's in Spanish.

The Memory of A Killer is also a good one. I thought it was a very interesting plot. It is also rated R and in Dutch, with English subtitles.

Cache
Also rated R and it's in French, with English subtitles. I'm not going to give away the end, though at first it did confuse me.

I recommend La Segunda Noche. It's one my favorite Mexican movies. It's from 1999, but I still watch it every time it's on tv. I didn't like the first one La Primera Noche so much, but the second one(an entirely different story) was much fun to watch. I'll think of more. I like watching movies from different places.
