The original barbie doll was based off a german hooker named "sissy" the doll then was called sissy, A man changed the body to what it is today with his friend who worked with plastics used to make weapons for the army.

Toys are used for roll playing, its a learning tool for kids... not so innocent after all eh?

Of course, like anything else, its been screwed up to promote a certain image. I doubt the Barbie Doll thing is actually subconciously convincing girls they have to be ditzy airheads- I think its just trying to give them "Doctor Barbie" to play "doctor" with. I mean, from every little kid I've seen, they don't really care about the clothes or the fashion (Most little kids I see rip the clothes off, actually). They just play with it with their imagination.

Okay, back on the more prevalent topic. I do agree with you. Especially with MTV and the like, more and more people are being almost brainwashed. I think it doesnt just apply to looks (In the explicit "Look like this" fashion). I think it also can apply to brands of clothing/music/etc, actions, and the like. For example, have any of you ever known someone who emulated a trait they saw on TV they liked? (For example, a girl saying "Yah" because her favorite girl on some TV show says it, thus thinking she'll become whatever the girl on TV is)

Of course, this doesnt mean I'm gonna go crusade about it. I think its not something that can't be prevented- if you're being affected by something, stop doing whatever it is. I'm not going to call the FCC up and tell them to remove advertisements because some peer-pressure weakened girl is buying the product.

My favorite action figure/doll was always Jesus.

You guys seriously have no idea about barbie. Barbie is not about the "look" its about teaching little girls how they should be when they grow up. Ever notice space barbie complete with high heels? All her different personas cant complete the job they are ment to be because of the clothing. "scientist barbie" shes laying in a lawn chair at the beach with a shovel. It tell girls they arent suppose to do any real work. It gives girls this power to do rolling playing with these dolls. It teaches girls to become consumers. Why do you think women like to shop so much?

When they played with barbie they had to have all the dresses, shirts, shoes, hair styles, etc. It teaches girls this so when they grow up, they will do the same but for themselves.

THE END.

yes, i'm sick of it. but this is not a new topic, no?

things are already changing. just be patient, and you'll start to see less Barbie. I mean, for awhile now the Brunettes were going to have a revolution!

besides, just because its mainstream dosen't mean its popular too. look at porn sites. the sheer diversity of that should give you hope that the 'barbie' look isn't always the best. Razz

(and for the record, i dont go to porn sites. i just know what i've been forced to look at through ads... heehee..)

sorry, just trying to throw in some diversity since one of the complaints was too many "white" people on the screen (barbie is white I guess).

Good point. But that mexican part was a little bit racist.

Anyhoo, the point is, that there is no set in stone opinion of beauty. Villages smash heads when they're babies to protray beauty. It's alll in the culture, honey, and if you don't like it, move. Smile.

Would you prefer that M.T.V. replace Carson Daily with a really, really fat dude? Would you prefer that instead of Brittney Spears on the screen jumping around we had a 350lb. old mexican woman? The reason MTV only portrays beutiful people is because sex sells, and MTV's job is to keep your heiny in that chair so they can advertise products and tell you what music is "cool" at this particular moment. Nobody really wants to watch shows or movies with ugly people, because that's what most of us see in our lives all day long anyway.

And i prefer breasts
Wow, pretty straight forward there aren't ya Bella? JK!

Anyways, nobody is ever as fat or as ugly or as dumb as they think. Everyone has their own unique beauty. You just have to find it in yourself before others can find it in you. The way I see it, if someone isn't going to ask me out because I appear or am ugly to them, then they aren't the people that I want to date. If a friend doesn't want to be seen with me because my clothes are out of style, then that's not a friend that I would want to be friends with. I want poeple to accept me for who I am not for the way I may or may not look. Our bodies are just our shells-- it protects the things that matter most.

There are a lot of versions of beauty in the media. Maybe you should check your sources. Not everyone in the world is shallow. Take a look around, em. There are SO many versions of beauty, open those gyes of yours! And i prefer breasts, not boobs. Maybe you should watch something besides MTV.

you're still pretty young Em, trust me it gets better. although the media still does promote this image (particularly of women) nobody cares what you look like after a certain age. i look back at pictures of myself in highschool with bottle blonde hair and size 12 dress size and think i look beautiful. only wish i could have appreciated it then.
