I completely agree with Amaris. Rap music is not appealing in its current form.

The only good rap is the old-school, hardcore ****. Watch Aqua Teen Hunger Force on Adult Swim, and the opening song will give you a taste.

I'm really into most types of music, but I can not stand rap, because their is no depth to it. When rappers stop rapping about their money, their women, sex, cars, "bling-bling" and start talking abot things that matter, then I'll start listening to it. On the other hand, I like some artists, I'm not sure what I would classify them as, hip-hop or rap like Ms. Dynamite. But I'm not going to waste my money on artists who sing only about how many hoes they have, and what they're wearing. No one gives a **** about that. If they wanted to know what you're wearing, they'd watch you on TV. Sing about things that matter. Make an impact. Jesus. It's sad, because some people have great voices, they are just completely shallow and insipid. And not just rappers, a lot of rock artists are like that, but I see it mostly in rappers. And can someone explain to me what the real difference between hip-hop and rap is?

Yea, rap's origin is with African-Americans. I don't understand the relativity of this post.

From my perspective, the NWA seem to be generalizing all females as promiscuous beings that only exist as a source of sexual pleasure. And they say "n-i-gg-a" a lot, as well. We have so many people complaining about certain individuals saying these racist remarks, but these same people are content listening to rappers habitually repeat them in their songs? Hmmm...

(just click on "listen again" to hear it.)

I was mainly referring to the NWA generalizing all females are promiscuous w-hores.

Come on now gemini, they arent talking about all females they are talking specifically about the w-hores.

I was mainly referring to the NWA generalizing all females are promiscuous w-hores.

But I listen mainly to classical music, such as Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, Schumann, Barber, etc. And I also listen to some hard-core rock, but nothing too vulgar. Meh.

Anyway, most rappers that I hear today -only- sing about sex, money, and violence. I think that they should re-think their lyrics because little children grow up on that type of music. Granted these pop-princesses and boy-wonder bands do the same, but I don't listen to them Big Grin

But as long as people enjoy what they listen to, then they should be able to listen to it in peace, and without people like me telling them what’s right and not right to listen to.

And thanks for editing me, Lissa. I tried to be inconspicuous and name a song, but…

Rappers like Jay Z and Nelly are kind of screwing it up for a cultural music genre that really is an amazing art.
Yea, those guys do truley suck at what they do.

I enjoy rap. Dj is correct that the reason many of the songs we hear have profanity and racey lyrics is because those are the lives that many rappers are/were living. I think that if you dig deep though you will find many rappers who rap about other things or about the same things but in a manner that expresses the ideas better. Here are some artists/groups to check out:
Eligh
Blackalicious
Jedi Mind Tricks
Swollen Members <---AHAHA funny name Razz
and Bone Thugs are definitly your regular "dirty rap" but they do it very well.

Bone Thugs In Harmony's cover of "**** the Police" is much better than NWA's original.

Gem,
That’s the point of their music, sex, drugs and violence runs rampant in the inner city so they are rapping about what their life is like. I'm not saying at all they are perfect, but at least they are bringing the reality of what the ghetto is like; where in most cases "morals" and "values" have no contest against the reality of the street.
In general I’m not a big fan of rap/hip-hop, but I give credit where credit is due.

Just out of curiosity Gem, what type of music do you listen to that is free from the discussion of Violence, drugs or sex?

dj, I'm perusing over some of their other lyrics, and it appears that they fit my "rap" stereotype: sex, drugs, and violence.

Yes, they may have had some bad encounters with certain police, but they rap derogatively about most things, as I see.

For instance, their song entitled "I'd Rather **** You" supports that rap=crap generalization.
quote:
...where the police had been in trouble many times for racial profiling and various other racial problems. You have to take the song as a protest against the blatant misconduct by the police.

Yet, this group seems to generalize all females as b-itches and w-hores, and complain about racial profiling. Something seems a bit wrong here.
