As I understand it, those who do are the Yakuza, and people at the bathhouse give them a wide birth.

In Australia, the alchohol culture is as follows: Getting seriously wasted on ' the piss' ('booze' in Australian) is virtuous. Indeed the more 'pissed' you are the greater the acomplishment. Getting really pissed is equivalent to say, winning an event in the olympics, and is met with the same compassionate enthusiasm.
