Years ago, when movies & TV came about, local talent that performed for the community lost out everywhere, replaced by "celebrities" on the screen & "tube"....a lot of talent was wasted! There are some local theatre groups, but many don't have a venue for their talents, and end up in misery with jobs they hate just to earn $money$. No wonder there are so many unhappy people across each country that has mass entertainment. We need to encourage local programming everywhere, and give a spot for people to blossom their talents; and, do away with the "star system" that pays obscene salaries & attention to just a few [sports "celebrities", too] who now consider themselves "gods & goddesses" [with copy-cat attitudes infesting many everywhere], who think they are above the law (Winona Ryder) and the rest of us & act like it! Celebrities reinforce inequality !!

Of course we don't NEED celebrities, but where's the fun in that? lol There's a lot of local bands here. They play at Smoothie King sometimes And, well yeah. There's a lot of local talent I think. I don't think the stuff on the strip counts though

It would probably be more effective to attempt to assemble, fund, and promote local entertainments than it would be to end stardom. That's just not going to happen. I do feel that there should be more emphasis on local entertainment and culture. Love, Jen.

___Whining about it isn't going to destroy technology. And as long as there is technology there won't be much of an appreciation for silly, expensive, petty, live shows. It's all about convenience nowadays. Get over it.

To answer your question, no we don't NEED celebrities. But I disagree with what you're saying about them. What you're saying right now is stereotypical, even if you don't agree; you're judging people that you have no clue about. You don't KNOW these people personally. You might have met a few for some seconds, but #1 that's not nearly enough time to get to know them, and #2 that's just a few, not all, of them. And a lot of the celebrities out there are extremely talented in many people's points of views.
And celebrities do so much more than just act in movies or play sports. Ones that care (which is a lot) have the money to make a difference. Money may not be everything, but it IS needed for those who don't have it; it's a necessity. Celebrities make millions, and a lot of them use that money to donate to those who have less, such as cancer victimes and homeless families. You may not realize it, but celebrities are helping in the making of making the world a little bit better. Maybe not all of them, but a lot of them. They're just like everyone else, except they chose different jobs; they still deserve to be treated like everyone else.
So, no, we don't NEED stars... but they can help out a lot.

do we really need anything? Stuff like houses, we could just use huts, or overcrowded apartments like most other countries. Do we need any entertainment? We should just work all the time, like they did before they had time for there to be celebrities. The fact is, once there was time for there to be celebrities, there was. And the talent isn't wasted because there's always somewhere up the ladder you can go.
I see plays at the schools and colleges and theatres around here, and frankly I'm glad to see someone who's really good at it, that's exactally what celebrities are. The fact that they're paid so much is because they're worth so much.
