i just bought a Creative nomad jukebox zen xtra MP3 player and i want to start filling it up. i can't use itunes because that is only compatible with ipods. my player isn't compatible with napster to go, and if i use reglular napster i have to pay a flat fee each month plus a dollar per track, which seems stupid. i tried emusic but their selection of music is extremely poor (they have none of the mainstream artists or musical soundtracks i was looking for, it's mostly indie and punk rock). so my question to you is this: what is the best legal online music download website? thankies.

It actually DOES say adam and steve. Thats what you get for reading the translation!

No, Limewire is not legal. Neither is TorrentSpy, but it is the best by far, and the only one I use.

totally random but is limewire even legal? i don't think it is cos you aren't paying for the music unless you get the advanced version. plus every now and then i'll get music that's all corrupted. it took me like 20 minutes once to find a good copy of a song

I use a German site, http://www.downloads.nl

The results are decent and really fast to download. Just search MP3s and then right click on a link of the song you want and select "save target"

Limewire is my favorite. Kazza sucks. BitTorrent is OK but it doesnt have very good search results.

Sharing may be caring, but it's not particularly legal to download most of the music on P2P networks.
quote:
MP3 music files have been available for several years, and file-sharing programs are more popular than ever. Still, many people are confused about what is legal and what isn't. Can downloading music put you at risk for legal action?

It's no wonder so people are confused. The Net is full of sites with ads for "Napster replacements" which claim to be 100% legal. You may have read claims that "MP3 is legal" and "file sharing is legal." These statements are true, but very misleading.

Is MP3 legal? Yes, because MP3 is just a file format (see The ABC's of MP3). Indeed, the vast majority of MP3 files found on the Web are perfectly legal, put up there by unknown bands who want to get noticed or by established artists promoting their current material.

Is file sharing legal? The vast majority of files shared on P2P (peer-to-peer) networks like KaZaA and Shareza violate copyright law because they were posted without permission of the artist or label.

Since it's impossible to determine which files may be legitimate, the only sure way to stay legal is to avoid file sharing programs altogether.

What is clearly illegal is unauthorized copying of commercial music. This usually means MP3's that are made from CD's and then put on the Net by individuals who haven't sought permission from the artist or music company.

What do copyright laws allow? To put it simply, you may make a copy of your own CD for your personal use. That means you may record it to a cassette tape or rip it to MP3 files. You may not, however, give this copy to another person. Many people believe that if no money is involved, then no law has been broken. This is false. Whether you give the copy away or sell it, this is still a violation of copyright law. (See Ten Big Myths about Copyright Explained).

The bottom line: if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. If you want the latest hits, you need to pay for them. Fortunately, the legitimate online music services are very good, and the competition is keeping the prices down.

I personally don't use legal channels for my music downloads (for shame, I know), but I know Wal-Mart has a legal music download site. Other than that, there are iTunes and Napster, but you've already ruled them out. If you have Windows Media Player 10, you can go up to the tab at the top right corner by the MSN butterfly and it'll take you to a list of legal music download sites. Or you can click the tab in the same area that says "Music" and download music from MSN Music for $0.99 a track.

Itunes is not just for ipods, it works fine with my Sony MD. But a good site for downloading musica legally is Sony Connect: www.connect.com. This is the service that was provided with my MD player. It has quite a variety of music.

Yeah, you like many are caught in a bad situation. You want to download music for your MP3 player but the big 5 record labels really don't want to change. The only reason that sites like iTunes even exists is that the record labels put a TON of digital rights management on the songs. The music industry says it is losing money on piracy, but the only reasons people pirate music is that they want MP3s without going to walmart to but the CD. If they would just make it easy to download legal music everyone would do it. Sorry I can't provide a better answer but either buy the CD you want and take a ton of time converting it to MP3s, or try to find some artists you like off eMusic.
