This show is hilarious, if you haven't seen it you must be a bit dense, innit? Basically this oxford educated actor plays 3 different characters (which is he is INCREDIBLY good at staying in) and he dupes unsuspecting people with his over the line behaviour.
My favorite character is Borat. Any other Ali G. fans out there?

While I think all racist jokes are essentially weak (Not because they aren't funny, its because its the traditional old crap-comic standby- if you have no skill, get racist), I think Ali G should be able to say what he wants. I recently ran a humor website where I insulted someone, and he started threataning legal action and the like- when it was all a farse designed to poke fun at him.

My concern is that that happens WAY too often- people get bent out of shape about the stupidest things. And thats why its important to make sure you're not pushing that line, because someone out there has less of a sense of humor and more of a lawsuit trigger finger than you'd think.

I like Borat best too, althought the gay Austrian, Bruno, is pretty damn funny too. Ali G has got a little old I think.

What I remember of the last Borat series was when he got all these mid-western Americans singing along to anti-Semitic songs. Sinister.

quote:
He is not mocking blacks or jews, he is mocking the following with each respective character:
Ali G.: Ignorant ghetto type people, specifically white kids whom act and talk like they are from "da projectz". foreigners
Borat: Khazikstan in general, foriegn people who come to the US and don't know any of our customs or practices and try to practice their own
Bruno: flaming homosexuals, superficial fashion type people, foreigners.

Hm. I agree with you that it's a good show but I think you've missed the point…

When Baron-Cohen plays these characters he is not mocking people from Kazakhstan etc, and foreigners visiting America, so much as he is mocking the people around them. When he is playing the character it is a show, the joke is on how the real people respond.

If anything, he is mocking America. Not that that should cause offense, he did the same in England.

Is Kazakhstan realy anti-Semitic? Cause I was under the impression that Cohen just uses it as a device to cause a stir… I don't know that it's an accurate portrayal of Kazakh attitudes at all.

When he is in character as Borat or Bruno, he is acting as if he is from Khazikstan or Austria, respectively. People from both of these countries in general are indeed anti-semetic and he is merely staying in character. Are you saying that because of the halocaust jewish people cannot laugh anymore or make jokes about their own religion? 2 of my best friends are jewish and one of them is the one that turned me on to Ali G. to begin with!
Seinfeld used to make all kinds of jewish jokes, did you ever watch his show or his stand up? The only difference was his jewish jokes were phrased differently like "why is it that every time I go to a brisque...?" Sacha's jewish jokes make fun of the way that other people stereotype jews, that is why my jewish friends find it humorous.

And i bet you are going to respond by saying free speech!! forget it, im not going to watch his cr...stuff (YN i wont use the word i wanted to) but i cant change your mind Barkid so watch it but remember MLK jr died for what he believed in, 6 million jews died for what they believed in and you are watching some guy mock what they died for...

Lots of people hate muslims. Ali G is a genius just like Bill Hicks.

Okay look, Baron Sacha Cohen is not really anti-semitic, he is taking the comedy to another level. He is willing to make fun of his own race as well as others (his reference to black people as "chocolate faced" might seem a bit rude to some, but he is in character).
Also, it is twice as funny when he makes jew jokes and people respond because he is jewish and they have no idea they are talking to a jewish person, that's the beuty of it. There is an episode where he is talking to a redneck about freedom and the redneck says "the ability to live without the jewish hand in your pocket". After he says this Baron (in character as the homosexual Bruno) pushes gay issues on the man twice as hard, and nearly gets punched for it. Because this guy made an antisemetic comment Baron wanted to ridicule him even more, which he did. Ali G. is not anti-semetic, its ingenius.

BOOYA KASHAH.

It is one of the funniest shows I have ever seen in my entire life. I just got the first season on DVD and was crying I was laughing so hard.

You are right Moo, that song is great. Everybody is like singing along with him and shouting the words out loud. The Philly Police Dep't one is funny too

BORAT IS THE BEST! Have you seen "Throw the Jew Down the Well"? That was the funniest episode, IMO.
