Obviously, we are ridiculously saturated with the cookie-cutter whiny pop that plays on loops on "buzz" stations worldwide. If anyone disagrees with this, this is likely not the board for you. What I'm interested in is the evolution of "good" pop - the Bens (Kweller, Lee, Folds, Harper), Starsailor, Rooney if you like, Phantom Planet etc. This is all basically rock/pop, and I see in their development the beginnings (I hope!) of some decent music accesible to the mainstream. We sort of lost a lot of that spirit in the 90s, I think, and very much so in the 80s (though it was there if you knew where to look! Tracy Chapman...) I must say, Norah Jones is doing a lot to educate people about "good" music - even though she beat out Bruce which engenders my bitterness - and I like that she's bringing pop soul to more listeners. Here's hoping that she last long enough to see the end of that pansy Josh Groban Who Cannot Sing Normally and Should Never EVER Cover a Great Don McClean Song, The Melodramatic Opera Fool. Of course, 60s and 70s stuff still wins, what with the Beatles and Jethro Tull and the emergence of Queen and Clapton and Emerson, Lake and Palmer and YES! Phew.

I like Yes too! I have the cd 90125, and I've been to 3 Yes concerts. I even got to meet the band. It was awesome. I've also played a piano duet with Patrick Moraz, one of Yes's old keyboard players. I was scared out of my mind, but it was awesome. lol I have a picture that I'll try to download later with us playing at the piano together.

Yes rocks! "Long Distance Runaround" is one of my favorite songs. I've been on this strange Ravi Shankar/Jethro Tull kick lately. If anyone can explain how this happened...

Death to pop music. It's just a bunch of talentless, good-looking people singing about stuff that doesn't matter. Take Hilary Duff, for example. She is a pop icon, but is probably the most talentless person to ever hit the airwaves. Her lyrics are so unintelligent (which is surprising, because she has a professional song writer to write her songs) and her voice does not even reach the point of mediocrity. Then again, it would be unfair to label it her own voice. Let me rephrase that then: Her computer hasn't even reached the point of mediocrity. I'd much rather listen to rock or music from a different decade.

SolG- If no one listened to pop, the pop radio stations would be off the air and this thread wouldnt be around. Just because you're into rap music doesn't mean the world is. And "pop" means "popular"- I wonder how it got its name... hmmmm? Music is never out of fashion, hun. I've got The Clash blaring out of my speakers right now.

I agree with you, because it's more about appearance and sex than real talent(although I will admit I'm not that big a fan of the Beatles-no offense) Just about every "pop star" has done 1 of the following: 1)appeared in their video in revealing clothes or shirtless(for the guys) or were making out w/ sum1 in the video or hanging out with s!utty looking girls 2) Some romantic relationship business has been major Hollywood gossip... or gossip about something else superficial i dont listen to much pop at all... unless Placebo is counted as pop

I hate the way pop music sounds now. No band, no talent. They all look, sound, and act the same. Nobody has come along recently that just made me go . I gave up pop totally. Unless of course I am listening to the Beatles (I love the Beatles) or someone else from their time period that actually has talent. When they had the flare and a real band. Now they get by according to who shows the most a@@ and can look the sl*ttiest.
