I've always wondered about certain shows on television.. such as Howard Stern, Stripperella (or something of the kind). Then, there came the dating games when I was in junior high. Those were pretty harsh on the brain. What seems to be the fad now? Reality TV. I have to admit, I totally don't understand the concept of Survivor, Big Brother, or Real World (maybe American Idol, MAYBE..)etc. I say I don't understand because I honestly cannot get into those shows, and I can't understand how other people can be sucked in like that. Is there a magical formula to all of this? Somebody tell me!
Also. Teen dramas. Somebody explain the meaning of those to me. What I Like About You is not funny AT ALL! I've tried to watch it. I don't see it! Smallville? Okay, Lex is rather attractive... fine. I'll leave the horrible acting alone. Buffy? THAT needs some explaining. I may dislike Buffy only because I'm a huge fan of vampires, and I think Buffy totally undermines (disgraces) vampires on a whole. What's the attraction? Romance? Sexy celebs? The rot-your-brains-out-while-you-watch acting?

I.. am very hungry. Must peel myself away from Animal Planet and go eat.

I used to love 7th Heaven and I still watch the old re-runs. The newer ones are anything but realistic. It is the farthest thing from a Christian family. I like American Dreams because it seems realistic and not racey. I used to love reality TV, then I started to realize that each producer is trying to leech off one another's ideas and it is becoming a joke. I hope this gets better but I have a feeling it will only get worse. If anyone knows of a good, enjoyable, believable, TV seris please share.

ps. i agree logos. anime sucks when you have the crappy english voice overs interrepting it.

I did not say that. I said anime in general is not very good. The plots are usually overused to the point where you want to puke. The characters are offed ripped off of some other series. Most series lack substance.

Akira got old with the blood squirting and loose artwork. Ninja Scroll's rape scenes ruined it for me, but the fight scenes were good. I own the X anime series, and I have read up to volume 18 of the manga. I plan to stop, because the manga is lagging while the anime is already over. Vampire Hunter D, the original, was pretty bad. Bloodlust was great, though. I have the first four episode of Ghost in the Shell, but I was not aware until recently that they had made a series out of the original movie. Animatrix? I found it very intriguing, and I bought a copy of it for $20 at the last Anime Expo. My favorite was A Detective's Story.

as far as anime goes; cowboy bebop is the shiz bam bizzle nizzlet snipsnap sandwich! (it's good).

cartoons are about as much substance you'll get these days on television as far as escapism goes. (adult swim- family guy, home movies, aqua teen hunger force, futurama, trigun, big o, etc.). then there's the daily show, of course. and the DISCOVERY SCIENCE CHANNEL for broadband customers.

dragon ball is just like a soap opera that has been going on forever. if you don't know than don't ask.

but if you want reality.... CHECK OUT CSPAN 1, 2, AND 3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was just telling my friend how much i hate reality tv. Actually... i was at her house watching Big Brother and started screaming at the TV to shut the **** up. It is so rediculous and fake that it drives me mad. What makes ppl think this is reality? They have plots, they are acting... they just dont have scripts. Obsbournes is my only exception... it's just funny which outweighs the melodrama.

I actually like anime, cause, dispite some bad science and annoying translated scripts the overall plots are usually interesting. As for sponge bob... i love that sponge... that's where i turn for my don't-have-to-think-about-it-and-make-up-your-own-jokes tv... that or the travel channel (ya know... pretend i am actually going to be able to GO to these places someday... yea right...) most of the time tho i'm watching discovery (although there is truely terrible science there) or world link.

-sorry i do this: "..." so much

i would say reality tv shows would be the biggest fad on tv right now.. i find most of them a waste of money... like the mr million or whutever... or cupid for example.. 1 million dollars just to stay married for a year.. wh o wouldnt want to marry a very pretty girl and only stay together for a year.. or just live apart and not divorice for a year lol for a easy million dollars.. i cant get into those shows.. that and talk shows used to be the big thing.. jerry jerry! lol anyways that is my views on the new fads on tv

Actually, I don't know if any of them watch Cartoon Network. They probably do. But Heather, the anime-obsessed fanatic, watches shows that are in Japanese. I don't know if Cartoon Network airs other language-based cartoons, though.

know about.. six obsessed anime people who absolutely LOVE those shows I previously mentioned. One girl I know memorized the theme song to Gundum Wing, or something like that, and plays it on her piano constantly. She's even making an effort to learn Japanese so she can talk like the characters, heh.

... let me guess. They watch Cartoon Network? Maybe they're just deprived.. And a few of my friends are really into learning Japanese because of anime. I find that pretty ridiculous, because they're Chinese, and I don't exactly see them speaking very fluent Chinese. -_- I get the feeling that they're trying to be something they're not. Sure, I like the way certain phrases in Japanese sound.. like "ja ne". So much easier than "see you later". I'll just stick to subtitles.

So I don't really get to watch a lot of reality shows. Here are the ones that I occasionally watch and I think are okay...

American Idol/Juniors
For Love or Money I & II
Fame (American Idol wannabe though)
Cupid (Some funny people there)
Paradise Hotel (I hate all the drama though)

Well that's it. I have no life. Thank you. All the rest on local channels suck.

I LOVE TV IT HEALTHY AND POSSIBLY TEACHES YOU THINGS. WITHOUT IT WE COULD NOT SEE WHEN THE ASTRODUDES WENT ON THE MOON. TELEVISION IS SUPPOSED TO BE ENTERTAINING. IF YOU DON'T LIKE WHATS ON THEN CHANGE THE CHANNEL. ITS AS EASY AS THAT.

When I posted this thread, I remember catching Buffy on television at some random time. Cable. I don't recall which channel.

Yah, they show it on The WB (I'm sure most people get that, though) and on FX. But I don't watch enough television to know the exact times the show airs.

but those that do are totally worth watching/reading (Lain, Bebop, RG Veda, anything by Myuzaki, etc).

I haven't heard of any of those Wink The anime/japanimation I normally see while flipping through the channels is Dragon Ball Z, Pokemon, Digimon, Sailor Moon, etc.

p.s. Any reason you noticed my sig just now? Or is it just the topic of the thread?

I think reality TV is stupid. I think TV networks are willing to put anything on TV these days b/c many Americans will feed into it. It's a shame that one station can make something really good and other stations will try to capitalize on it. Take the 'Real World' for example. 7 strangers livng together in a "special" city who have their ups and downs but eventually become friends. I think that was good. If you had the chance to go to some faraway place wouldn't you accept? Now we have Survivor, Big Brother etc. The thing that makes the Real World different is this: these people are here for the experience. They aren't manipulating people for a chance to win money. I think networks should come up with their own ideas and not put stupid twists on others'.
