When I posted this thread, I remember catching Buffy on television at some random time. Cable. I don't recall which channel. It also popped into my mind because for some darned reason, people still talk about it. Don't take this too seriously. This post was really just me making a small complaint. I wouldn't exactly die for the cause of quality television, or anything.
As for anime, I don't take much offense. Anime is a joke in general, especially the kind you often times see on American television. But among fanatics, preferences vary, and there are those who are perfectly happy with certain anime/manga such as Love Hina (lacking in plot).. where you have five girls after one guy, still chasing his childhood dream of going off to this college to impress one of those girls. There's Fushigi Yuugi, where every single female character has either been raped, or potentially raped (no offense to anyone to actually LIKES those two I've mentioned).. and so on. There is rarely anything that will leave me dumbfounded and wishing for more.. but those that do are totally worth watching/reading (Lain, Bebop, RG Veda, anything by Myuzaki, etc).
eternal enemy of dubbed/cut anime, logos
p.s. Any reason you noticed my sig just now? Or is it just the topic of the thread?

Well...I figured out a breakdown of shows, tell me what you think. Some people don't like the following show types for the following reasons... -religious-7th Heaven- some people are severely anti-religion -Childrens-Teletubbies-all seem to have some sort of sexual symbolism and most adults dislike tham -reality-Survivor-doesn't resemble reality -Cartoons-Looney Toons-too violent -Fantasy-Charmed-too violent, insulting, and/or may lead people to believe that doing magic is okay -Soap Operas-too annoying and people come back from the dead Need I continue, or do you get the picture? EVERYONE DOESN'T LIKE SOMETHING!!!! LEARN TO DEAL WITH IT, OR TURN OFF THE TV AND READ A GOOD BOOK, EXPAND YOUR BRAIN!!!!!

Who knows? I can't get into reality TV either. But I do think Striperella is a pretty funny show. Wish they had better voice acting, but that's besides the point. And I don't know about anyone else but I watch Smallville from time to time cause it's cool to see how they worked in the stuff from Superman's past.

quote: I may dislike Buffy only because I'm a huge fan of vampires, and I think Buffy totally undermines (disgraces) vampires on a whole
Buffy isn't a show anymore. The series is over with (i.e. they're all re-runs). And vampires aren't real. Neither was the show. So I don't exactly see your discrepancy in its entirety. quote: the eternal enemy of dubbed/cut anime
I don't mean to offend you, but I think anime is a joke. I can't stand watching anything anime-related. The shows are inane and frequently have no substance to them other than fighting. Personally, I'd rather watch SpongeBob SquarePants, who I loathe. But I know I’m generalizing, so sue me.

ooooo, I adored buffy, it filled the void left when the x-files went permenantly bad right around the middle of season 6. and now I mourn the fact that the only thing thats come around that might replace it is smallville. and smallville isn't nearly as well written as either of the above. (on a side note, disgracing vampires? do you read to much ann rice? vampires are not lonely cuddly little creatures of the night that only the love of a good woman can save, their perversions of catholics as viewed by the Mooreish population of the Carpathian mountains and therefor the embodyment of the evil of an invading religion,)
hmmm, otherwise I don't understand the reality tv craze myself, though last semester I wrote a paper for a tv theory class about reality television being the rebirth of the circus sideshow. sort of a subconscience representation of freaks on display kind of thing. mostly I think americans like cheap comforting entertainment. that people 'like them' 'normal folks' could make it big on the television.
myself I pay way more attention to the other television production powerhouse, the BBC, they produce loads of cool and intresting stuff that doesn't rely on everybody being likable.

i must admit, i am a creek fan u.u; the reason i watch it (and i'll explain this as best i can) is probably something along the lines of it's supposed to be so close to my own life but really it isn't....you know? let me try that again. The people have problems every episode, and they somehow overcome EVERY single one of those problems and stuff. Yes, some of the stuff is really out of it, but some of it isn't and that's why i watch it? ok, i suck at this explaining thing, but yeah. : roud face:: As for reality tv, i think it should be taken off air and in its place should be uh...commercials??? -rito

I really like reality shows. Not because of the people on them, but because of the false sense of realness. People want to see something real on television so the watch reality shows. They have real people taken from their homes, and put on reality shows, but after being on a reality show, you can't be a real person anymore. Talk to everyone Later, Tawny

The public is fascinated by these "Reality Shows" due to their false perception of what reality tv really is. Shows like Big Brother, Survivor and such may fall under the label "Reality TV", but in fact they are just regular people ACTING like it's really reality.-Key word acting. The public feed off these "guilty pleasure" tv shows because they want to see the drama of daily life.-it's kinda like how one wants to know who's dating who, who's hating on who, etc...the need for useless gossip. How better to get one's daily dose of gossip than right on your couch every wednesday night or so. I am not 100% sure the reason behind this interest in Reality shows, maybe it's just a fad. Something to talk about amongst one's peers. People have different reasons. But the thing is these so-called reality tv shows aren't really reality. Honestly who acts like themselves when they know a camera is catching their every move, they may act more flamboyent, nicer, etc...when people know they are being watched, they are probably not being 100% themselves. So really these shows are just your regular sitcom with the storyline of people acting like it's everyday reality trying to win loads of cash. As for teen dramas, maybe it's the fact that they are the make belief realities that we secretly want to become part of. That may be attraction.

the american culture is sickly fascinated with FAME. becoming rich, and more importantly FAMOUS. it has become the highest esteemed ideal in our lives. fame. not teachers, but celebrities. not politicians, but controversial sports icons.
we are so attracted to reality tv, because the notion of becoming famous is materialized in front of us; YOU, ME, ANY REGULAR JOE, can become famous on tv. it seduces us.
it's really just a manifestation of the famous words, by pop artist andy warhol, during the 70's; "everyone will be famous for fifteen minutes". killyourtv.

I guess people watch reality tv because of their fascination with what will happen next, and seeing how people react. (those bloody plot twists drive me mad!) Also, they're probably so entranced because they're watching people do things they would never do themselves, like sing on a stage, eat bugs, or live in a house with six strangers, all on camera. Finally, they're probably looking for some tv icon to relate to, and with all the drama and heartbreak in these shows, they feel less alone in the world. (or, they're able to think "I'm glad I'm not that guy...") That's pretty much it. As for the teen dramas, sorry, you're on your own...
