Well, in 1796, Horace Mann was born. Horace Mann was the founder of public education. Eventually school up until 8th grade became required. Then in the great depression, there were too many teenagers in the work field. More kids in highschool, less jobs to find for everyone.

So, highschool became free, child labor laws were made and highschool became a required thing.

And that's a VERY brief explanation of why we have to go to school.

Second, I'm going to tell you a story.

So, Euclid (if you don't know who he is, maybe that's a good point for why you need school) was teaching geometry to some students. One of the students, throwing down his geometry work, yelled, "I don't see why this is going to benefit me! What do I get from this?"

Euclid stood up, and reached into his coin bag. Pulling out a coin and pressing it into the student's palm, he said with a disdainful tone, "There. Since you have to be able to SEE the benefit in everything."

The student was very embarassed.

well there is a point that can be made...some ppl say school is just to get a good job, well then u are falling rite into this anti-school speakers point. School is where u learned to read, and count and add and all those other things u use every day and dont' even consider. school is nessesary to keep everyone educated and to continue advancing the human race. if we were all ignorant to our pasts and undereducated in our knowledge, than how could we ever build on what we already have? and become even more advanced? and if u do jus skate through school and really do learn "nothign" and get just a "good job" and live your life with no introspection or insight, than u are just as ignorant as the one who says we dont' need school.

thats the stupidest question i have ever heard haha.. what are you, like, 12? you may not think that school is worth it now, but its really a prep for college, things you learn in school pays off in college. you have to learn on a level. each year you move up a level. or one year you move up, the next you review those same things and add on.

OK, I know some parts of school stink. Homework, for one. But also school is where i've met almost all the people I know. One other thing, where would kids go and what would they do while their parents went to work every day? Think about the things that you would miss. Field trips, lunch (oh no, mystery meat!) sports, art and music lessons, fun teachers, awards and projects...there are plenty of times in school when it isnt that bad. Also, as a number ofpeople pointed out, without it, we couldn't read or write (because no one would know, not even our parents!) books would be gone, no one would have a job, we would just go back to being primitive people. One last point: without school, we wouldn't enjoy summer at all! (i'm luvin it now!!! )

i think you people misunderstood what that quad guy was trying to say about acting within society...not socializing, he meant, working being productive, supporting the economy, staying in line, doing what every one else in society is doing...its kind of funny how schools are supposed to be centers for knowledge, but really all they are their for is to educate us in order for us to go out into the world and support the economy, which i think is pointles...but im not going to get into all of that jazz...

so you think that those teachers are at school every day, putting up with all these kids, and get paid close to nothing just to tell us all of this "stuff" just so we can forget? im sorry but i dont see the logic in that. i dont think that they went to college for, what? 8 extra years? i dunno, its something like that. just to tell us all of this "stuff" that we are just going to forget. teachers are teachers for reasons. they are smart. they have to be, other wise they wouldnt be allowed to be teachers. i dont believe that a smart person would do that. ~*Jessica*~

Well I've already graduated, but I don't think we should have to go to school either. Some of my most painful memories come from 13 years of agony called school. I regret not doing home school. After all look at what happened at Columbine a couple years ago. There should be no such thing as school. It would make life a hell of a lot easier.
