I recently had a discussion about the role of pop culture. There were those who said there's no reason to watch tv and pay attention to today's music, writing, etc. There was also the argument that the pop culture of previous times is history now. And then there was the argument that only time determines what is valuable, for example a classical artist is inherently more valuable than say, Tupac. What do you think? Is pop culture worthless?

I wouldn't say it's worthless but it's not high up on the importance scale.

I think watching TV and things like that were really exciting when they first came out, but now that they are here for quite awhile, they aren't that exciting anymore. However, you still watch TV because you know there is something you like even if the hype about it is gone.

For music, it's been here for a long time but I don't think people got sick of it, not yet at least. Even though, if you really listen to music, some of them are playing almost the same thing over and over again. However, because there is something new about it like IPods and new artists, the hype is sort of still there. A lot of classic like tupac or Ray Charlies are coming back and that creates hype too. People view music in different ways that creates something too.

I think it's about hype. If you have a new creative way in selling something, it won't be worthless, at least at that point.

For books, you get knowlegde from books. I think some people rather live in ignorance than know but how books sell is you learn and some people want to learn. You don't need a textbook, some books, you learn a lot from.

It is about time to some extend because for a period whatever is in pop culture, it's going to be popular then it will fade. Even though, it stays in history, it might come back and be popular again. However, again it will fade. If you keep on with it, like making new ideas and stuff, without changing the original product, it will be a lot of worth. However, some sell people change the original product to get sells and people don't like that. They like the old stuff, just add a little twist when they get bored.

I think I'm getting off topic so yea....what were were talking about?

...If pop culture is meaningless, I have no life.

But seriously, I think pop culture is important. But it's equally as important to weed out the amount of it when our history is written down. I'm sure there were tons of songs, people and events that historians dating back to ancient times deemed unimportant.

There's too much emphasis on celebrities in pop culture, and that's what is degrading it. We don't dwell on their work, the writing, the music, the lyrics, the visuality, the emotions. We wonder if the co-stars were shacking up behind the scenes. THAT is meaningless.

Pop culture defines eras. How do you define the last century? In eras of music. 10's? Film. 20's? flappers. 50's? Rock 'n' roll. 60's? Singer-songwriters. 70's? Disco, etc. It is nearly as important as the national/international events.

Pop culture is the soundtrack to world events.
