I hear all these annoyingly starry-eyed Republicans cheering that terrorism is on the way out the door. This bothers me. Terrorism is no closer to being 'gone' than it has ever been. After 9/11 there was a surge in terrorist activities, and it has decreased to normal levels, creating the illusion of 'less' terrorism.

Here's a little bit of bad coffee to wake you up: terrorism will never go away.

That's right. Terrorism stems from dissent and dissatisfaction. There will always be people who are PO'd at one government or another, so there will always be terrorists in one form or another. Think terrorists only fly planes into buildings and set off car bombs? Think again. The man next door who burns a cross in the black couple's lawn across the street is a terrorist. Environmentalists who deface Hummers and blow up oil refineries are terrorists. Those are examples of people who are fed up of one thing or another. And people will always be unhappy.

So stop thinking this pointless and futile "War on Terrorism" is being won. It isn't.

Yep, if one leader dies someone will take his/her place! There is no possible way that it can stop. e.g= if we kill off all insurgents in Iraq, another insurdent group will sprout up before u can say "Gone".

Unfortunatly in his own right clpo is correct in making the very simple observation that terrorism will never go away... and nethaeleth is living proof... terrorism isn't just al-quida, or mujadeen, or hizballah, or hamas... it's the cracker that bombs OK City or kidnaps little girls, or runs gang violence in toledo such as the KKK and Nazis. Psycos that bomb abortion clinics and planned parenthood are terrorists.

It's the black panthers and the bloods and crypts... So here's a thought... as moderate as I am, I am of the belief that terrorism should be fought at home first... there are more homocides and kidnappings on our home soil then there is al-quida attacks or even threats of attacks.

But because we are engaged overseas and the administration is under the illusion that by taking out senior leaders in terrorist groups is going to disband them and make them stop bombing people, we have alternate priorities. The fact is that post 9-11 the country wanted action, and they got it.

Now lets examine what fighting terrorism overseas is going to gain us:

It protects the people at home from attack... if they are pre-occupied with attacking military targets in Iraq and Afghanistan then that eases the threat of homeland attacks.

By destroying senior leadership it lessens credability for terrorist organizations and gives them less to bargain with.

But on the flip side when some one bombs an american convoy and Al-quida takes responsibility, do you really think that UBL told this guy to bomb it? Not a fat chance in hell, It's one guy trying to give the illusion of credibility and power.

The next problem is that the media expounds upon this by giving the terrorists credability by reporting it in a way that makes it sound like it's a big deal... If some one calls an FBI office and says that they are going to bomb the Tunnel in New York, they will shut down the tunnel for an entire day... who needs a bomb when you can do that and cause so much more disruption?

So in short while clpo is correct, it was a little over simplified and while nethaeleth is to an extent correct about fighting terrorists overseas it is relatively inneffective at achieving the national goal of ending terrorism.

So for further debate of this topic and to prevent administrative action it might be a good idea to keep it clean and civil, as in no more terrorist threats from neth about kicking a teenagers ass... because to be honest thats pretty damn immature.
