NDR! I like that! I agree with my sis when she says "If you have to name a day 'Patriot's Day', that means it's a day set aside to be patriotic on. If you can't be patriotic every day, only one day a year then you shoudn't be a patriot at all" because you're not, you just pose as on on a late summer's morn. I think we'll find a good name like NDR someday soon. Maybe we should ask the Prez what he thinks

Justice..., I think we'll have to agree to disagree on the Allende regime. I can't beleive you called Columbus a mass-murdering imperialist! You're the first conservative I've ever heard say that. This statement of yours is why I can't bear the thought of arguing w/ you right now. I do not wish to anger the most enlightened conservative I've met in several years. Well, not now anyway, when I'm still in shock that you're against Columbus Day.

Socrates: Pinochet's regime was horribly repressive and resulted in a temporary depression in Chile (mainly because the economy couldn't transition fast enough from Socialism to free market Capitalism). However, keep in mind that Allende was also becoming increasingly corrupt and pushing Chile on a crash course towards extreme Marxism (which would have had more or less the same results). The US government simply chose to support one evil over another, although obviously that doesn't make what it did right in the least. I don't think that a day of remembrance for our Sept. 11th tragedy is a bad idea though, especially if it replaces Columbus Day (the only holiday in US history to celebrate a mass murderer and imperialist enslaver).

I just wanted to state that September 11 was a very emotional day 2 years ago, and still is today. I've heard that people say that we shouldn't honor this day, because we would be honoring the terrorists. Well, my opinion is that if you want to think that's who we will be honoring then think that, but it's the people who died fighting for us is who we are honoring.

WOW!!! BOMOWO ACTUALLY SAID SOMETHING THAT I WILL AGREE WITH. WHY DIDN'T THEY CALL IT NATIONAL DAY OF REMEMBRANCE?? THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN PERFECT CAUSE PATRIOTS DAY DOES KIND OF SOUND LIKE "someone's not american or a patriot, they must be a bad person and want to hurt people." HMMMM...HOW CAN WE GET IT CHANGED??

I cannot in good conscience support a country which launch a major coup in a democratic nation on the anniversary of that coup. Therefore I cannot take part in 9/11 ceremonies if it's called Patriot's Day. But National Day of Remembrance or like name would allow me to mourn the victims of the Chilean coup of '73, and the victims of the plane crashes in '01. Plus, we already have plenty of "patriotic" holidays, such as July 4, Veterans' Day. Memorial Day, etc.

that title kind of makes it sound like if someone's not american or a patriot, they must be a bad person and want to hurt people. that's not usually the case. i like the person's idea above me about it being remembrance day instead.

I actually didn't know that they had come up with a name, but I think they could have done better than that, like maybe something like, National day of Remembrance. I don't know but I think a different name might be better. But I still salute everyone who died in 9/11. I hope that anyone involved will be able to stand strong and not forget.
