Hydrok is having an Oh shyte moment...It seems that the Thai military has indeed successfully overthrown the Thai government with NO resistance. I need to do some checking on existing treaties with Thailand, because I think the US has one that would allow us to intervene in the event of a military coup. I'll give the info as I get it.

If we decided that we were going to stick our nose in this for any reason, Iran would simply declare America racist against another Muslim, which would give them motivation to raise hell over it. It all really depends on what capacity the US decides to get involved.

I think America would be stupid to get involved too heavily in this region, one which has haunted them in the past and an area they don't have a lot of friends.

quote: Now the bad news... the US has a treaty with Thailand called the Thanat-Rusk communiqué of 1962 which states "Article IV(1) of this treaty provides that, in the event of armed attack in the treaty area (which includes Thailand), each member would "act to meet the common danger in accordance with its constitutional processes." Yes this includes military coups, because this is at least the fourth time this has happened.
I agree; this is more bad news if the US decides to stick its neck out again. From my understanding, the majority of Thais wanted the PM out of office anyway (similar to America's relationship to Bush or the UK's with Blair) so there shouldn't be a lot of fighting if any. quote: Further bad news is that the Army General that has assumed the PM roles is also a Muslim. Whether or not he's going to turn out to be a radical remains to be seen.
I highly doubt this has any significance, unless the Bush Admin. is smart enough to figure it out and then stupid enough to decide he MUST be a radical and destroy that country too.

why because he is a muslim might he be radical? its a stupid assumption. The coup has been successful, and the past has shown coups can be democraic and beneficial, i will site the 1960 coup in Turkey as evidence of this. Lets hope all goes well and the promise to return power in Thailand within 2 weeks is fullfilled.

Ok well the good news is the entire thing went off without a shot fired. It was pre-planned throughout the entire military and it was even co-conspired by the police as well. This has been in the works for well over a year with the amount of planning that had to be done. Now the bad news... the US has a treaty with Thailand called the Thanat-Rusk communiqué of 1962 which states "Article IV(1) of this treaty provides that, in the event of armed attack in the treaty area (which includes Thailand), each member would "act to meet the common danger in accordance with its constitutional processes." Yes this includes military coups, because this is at least the fourth time this has happened. Further bad news is that the Army General that has assumed the PM roles is also a Muslim. Whether or not he's going to turn out to be a radical remains to be seen. More information to follow
