On February 26th, you can join a massive march on Washington without leaving your living room. The Virtual March on Washington is a first-of-its-kind campaign from the Win Without War coalition.

Working together, we will direct a steady stream of phone calls — about one per minute, all day — to every Senate office in the country, while at the same time delivering a constant stream of e-mails and faxes. Our message: Don’t Attack Iraq.

On February 26th, every Senate office will receive a call every minute from a constituent, as they receive a simultaneous flood of faxes and e-mail. Hundreds of thousands of people from across the country will send the collective message: Don't Attack Iraq. Every Senate switchboard will be lit up throughout the day with our message -- a powerful reminder of the breadth and depth of opposition to a war in Iraq. And on that day, "antiwar rooms" in Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles will highlight the day's progress for the national media, while local media can visit the "antiwar room" online to monitor this constituent march throughout the day.

So far, over 85,000 of us have signed up to be a part of Wednesday's Virtual March on Washington. It's been incredible. That's well over our goal of an average of one call per minute per Senate office.
If you haven't registered yourself, just go to:

moveon.org

Now, we really could use your help in getting calls committed in the less populous states in the nation:

Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, Nebraska, Montana, Mississippi, Nevada, North Dakota, Oklahoma,
South Carolina, South Dakota, Utah, West Virginia, Wyoming.

If you live in one of these states, be sure to sign up. Then call friends and ask them to register and make the calls on February 26th.

If you're originally from one of these less populous states, now's the time to call home and talk to friends and family.

The Virtual March has already been a tremendous success with news coverage from all the major news outlets. You can see our TV commercial promoting the march, featuring Martin Sheen, on the registration page:

The Virtual March on Washington is a first-of-its-kind group effort from the Win Without War coalition. Working together, we'll direct
a steady stream of phone calls -- more than one per minute, all day --
to every Senate office in the country, while at the same time delivering a constant stream of emails and faxes. Think of it as a march -- one by one, we'll be passing through our Senators' offices and the offices of the White House to let them know how we feel about this war. You can sign up for your time to call or to place a free
fax right now at the link above.
It's only two days away...WE can make a difference. Register for your time to make the call and do it! Thanks!

A comment received from a MoveOn member in Connecticut is representative:

"I called Lieberman's office, and made my statement, and then I said to the man who answered the phone, 'this must be nuts for you today' and he said, 'My day will be hell, but it is so much better than apathy. This is what democracy is all about. I think it is terrific.'
I asked him if he thought it might change the Senator's position, and he said he wasn't authorized to speak on that, but that they were overwhelmed with the number of people speaking out from Connecticut."

Members of the House of Representatives (who were not targeted) took notice: Representative Anna Eshoo from California even took the time and sent us all a letter thanking us for marching. You can read it at:

Regardless of how you fell about big corporations, almost no one is against small businesses, many of whom were hurt by the "march" (with the exception of FedEx who I seriously doubt took much of a hit). Peaceful protest over a policy issue should not interfere with small business. That's not right. And these are small local businesses whose inconvenience will not be taken into account even margainally by the federal government, so it has wasted a good bit of money for nothing.

I'm all for peaceful demonstration, but the organizers of such events should take these things into account. That's all I'm saying.

madsaddam-I find your name to be very interesting, considering the posts you've made. Do you know what dissension means? You say dissension is kiiling our country; then how can you support this war? You're worried about congress working too hard, answering the phones and faxes? I think they finally had to work for those big bucks they get paid...actually, the interns, secretaries, and clerical people are probably the ones who were manning the phones. Have you ever called an elected official's office and spoke directly to the person? I never have.
Brooke-I guess it's too bad that businesses were put on hold and they lost money, but maybe now the government will listen and know that we are serious about the direction this is going.

just to let you know madsaddam your tax dollars are already going to waste. what with this whole stonewall on congress, regarding an apellete(sp) judge that BUSH is trying to nominatee(who incidentally will precide for the rest of his life and has yet provided enough adiqute information for the senate to approve of)... LET CONGRESS GET ON TO BIGGER FISH YO!!!

(MODS PLEASE HELP ME OUT HERE.... I LOOKED FOR THE BILL... COULDN'T FIND IT... PLEASE HELP ME..)

tom daschle presented an excellent energy bill to the senate, which i would have more details about had it not been buried somewhere under bush hublabla.^

and there's other more important matters i'm sure you'd agree need addressing, but hey..... bush needs his judge. tax dollars go bye bye bro.

Just wanted to say that while in theory it was a nice idea, the Virtual March on Feb 26 actually did fairly substantial damage to a number of businesses that service the Congressional office buildings. Companies making deliveries (couriers, FedEx, and food delivery most specifically) lost loads of time and money yesterday trying to make impossible deliveries; new regulations require that anyone making a delivery to Congressional office buildings must have telephone verification by the recipient of the delivery, which was made impossible since the Capital Hill switchboard was overloaded all day with stupid protest calls. Good job!

Geez, are you really 52? Some of the stuff you say, I figured you were 13. That's kinda weird...
quote:
When are you going to get it that it is dissention that is killing our country.
The last I heard, only around 27% of American citizens support the war on Iraq without UN support. Isn't this a democracy? Aren't our leaders supposed to be representing us? And furthermore, when it gets to this point, who's dissenting?
quote:
You need to respect your government enough to envision that although you might not agree with them on everything, that they truly do have the best interests of the majority of Americans in their utmost mind. Besides, they have families and friends to worry about too.
First of all, I don't "need" to do anything, let alone respect imperialists who certainly haven't earned my trust. And I think it's pretty naive to say that politicians are acting purely out of the goodness of their own hearts and love of the American public, and that they'll only do what's good for us, and that they have no ulterior motives. That's just ridiculous.

Look, war is NASTY! We didn't ask for this war. We were going about our own business enjoying our "surplus." We wanted nothing but the best for our families and the chance to help people around the world.

We were ATTACKED in 1993 at the World Trade Center. We were ATTACKED again on September 11, 2001.

The most expensive war we had was World War II when we decided to "help."

The next most expensive war was the Vietnam War which I was against because I felt our youth needed a better reason to fight in that one. But I didn't BASH our government or our military.

There is no draft right now. You need to support your peer youth who elect to put their lives on the line for you. You need to respect your government enough to envision that although you might not agree with them on everything, that they truly do have the best interests of the majority of Americans in their utmost mind. Besides, they have families and friends to worry about too.

And when it comes right down to it, we all know that war is HELL! Wars don't even always determine what we set out for them to determine, i.e. the answer to the question - who is right?

But they do determine one other very important bit of information and that is the answer to the question -- who is left?

Oh great. Another way that the taxpayer's money can be eaten up because senate and congressional workers will be manning the phones and faxes and emails all day.

When are you going to get it that it is dissention that is killing our country.

Everyone wants their little piece of the pie. I'm going to watch South Park. And eat some pie.
