Question:
I'm doing an essay on the threat of a total smoking ban in public places in Canada. I'd just like to get some feedback on what you guys think of this.
Thanx!

Choices:
(smoker) Make it a total ban
(smoker) This is against smokers rights
(non-smoker) Ban it, I don't want to breath in toxic fumes
(non-smoker) I don't care about the smokers in public places
(either) make it a partial ban, smoking rooms allowed

I live in Minne-nosnow-ta and we've had the smoking ban in public resturants, bars (etc) for a few months now. So, last week I went to the casino for my 18th birthday and it was so gross. My lungs/throat still hurt the next afternoon. It really makes a HUGE difference.
plus, no one wants to kiss someone who tastes like ash!

This is actually a very hot topic in philadelhia curently. There is a ban of smoking in public bars and other indoor areas. I belive they are trying to extend it to sidewalks as well. Atliantic City Has also ban smoking on casino floors.

Smoking? There's nothing wrong with it in public. BUT, a huge but and a very serious one. When they have "smoking stations" next to the bike locks, it is hell on us bikers! Seriously. We get to where we're going, breathing hard, sucking in air, and all of a sudden our healthy, athletic lungs are filled with the noxious, disgusting fumes of the Smokey Death ©Shade. Seriously, do stores and corporations have no public decency?! Some of us don't want to breathe it. And some of us can't! I can't lessen my time by them, either, because I have to lock my bike up, and take all the riggings off or they'll get stolen.

Haha this is an extremely old post.

Plain and simple- smoking is a disgusting addiction. But the elimination of the tobacco industry through a total ban would result in an economic depression and a great loss of jobs. It's sad to say, but as a nation we can't afford to ban smoking.

Smoking should be banned in public plaaces because why should people who don't want to kill themselfs have to do so because other poeple don't want to respect their wishes.

I know here in Florida, somking has been banned in public places but there is a designated outside area where they can go.
My parents and I can't eat in restraunts in other staes anymore because they haven't banned smoking.

Well it's a confusing subject b/c there are people who can't be around smokers but there are people who do smoke. It's public which means it's for EVERYONE ... but, smokers are also kind of harming the public's health...so i guess, in a sense, they're a danger to the public? I'm not sure...

All the bull surrounding this subject is terrifying. As a smoker in NY where smoking is baned in all buildings and coverd areas it sucks. Every day there are new code laws telling us to stay away from more and more enterecnes. "Smoking not permitted 10 feet" whatever. What are they going to do sue me for murder.

As for waitresses in bars. Go work somewhere else. Theres tones of jobs in food service. It was your choice to work there. And you may smoke yourself.

I don't want to freeze in the winter anymore. I don't wan to burn up in the summer anymore.

AND... don't take away my rights just because you don't like it.

You have the right to leave.

It makes me seriously ill. My housemate smoked in the house one night, just one cigarette and at the complete opposite end of the house.

I almost died.

Turns out some people are ridiculously sensitive to it, I developed some lung conditions that usually only heavy smokers get.

I wear an air purifier on a cord round my neck and try to avoid going out because there is always someone smoking outside going for a walk or something & just walking past someone who is smoking is enough to make me bedridden for a week or 2.

So I think it should be banned for people like me so that we won't die! I'd say that's a pretty good reason Smile

Your analogy is lacking validity... Smoking is a choice, while race is genetic.

If you made the "smoker room" it would just be like the "colored room" that happened in the south from the jim crow laws.
People should just learn not to smoke and make there life a hell of a lot easier.

Well, then don't go to that public place. Seriously, it's a courtesy issue. The smoker is not being very courteous, but the government is not a nanny. The government is not there to sort out the little child-problems.

"Do I have to listen to his stupid music? Make him turn it off!"

"I don't want to stare at the picture that Bobby put on the bedroom wall. Make him take it off!"

Those are things that nannies do. The government is not our nanny.
