I went to the dentist yesterday, and he told me I needed to have my wisdom teeth removed. I must confess, I am scared to death (I'm such a baby). Has anyone had their teeth pulled? Can you share with me your experience, and help me chill out? Franks~
I have the same problem with my wisdom teeth. I was wondering what it means when they are exposed and if the surgery will take longer? I have one tooth that has grown in sideways and it causes me daily headaches. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
well, the posts i read were lucky. i don't mean to scare you or anything, but it can be pretty bad.
i had mine pulled in august of 2002. all four of mine were impacted, which means that the wouldn't come out of the gum. they had to do a full surgical procedure for me, which meant no eating for 6 hours (my surgery was at 3 pm! ugh...), and the whole anesthesia thing. the teeth were so big they had to cut two of them in half to take them out.
i didn't eat the rest of the day, just slept watched an episode of "law and order:criminal intent" (the folks at nbc must have known i was getting my teeth out, they had my fave show on three nites in a row!)
i was on vicodin for about 2 weeks, and didn't become addicted . i also had to take an antibiotic, because the sockets became infected (it happens to about half the people).
just take it really easy the next few days. be careful when eating, not to chew on the inside of your cheek. the swelling will go down. and have fun drinking smoothies!!! (mmm...smoothies...)
It really wasn't that bad. I hardly bled at all, and I was back to eating my usual foods within a few days (though I think against the dentist's orders :P). Be careful when you brush your teeth, though, which you'll have to do a lot of. I didn't think the pills were that bad; but then again, I've been taking prescription meds since I was pretty young. Just don't hold them in your mouth for a long time. One nice thing: the anesthesia provides a nice temporary high... ahhh...
Don't stress too much about it...it's really not that bad. I didn't have much pain at all...they gave me the gas and the numbing stuff, then I put on a CD player so I wouldn't have to hear.
For me the worst part was the gauze. I bled quite a bit, so I'd have to change out the gauze very often...which was disgusting to see. Plus, because of all the blood I couldn't swallow or else I'd throw up. And yeah, the pills are horrible. They taste/smell like crap and they go all through your system so your sweat smells like the pills...and so will your bathroom. (Too much info..I know.) All that is not painful, though...just annoying. Basically, don't worry about the pain.
for me, the worst part of getting my wisdom teeth out was 1) having such a restricted diet and 2) the penicillin/amoxacillin antibiotic pills leave a horrible taste in your mouth.
i was asleep for my operation and used painkillers for 2 days after the operation and had no real pain, just a dull throbbing discomfort from time to time. the holes in my gums took awhile to heal, though; i played basketball 5 days later, got hit in the jaw, and started bleeding all over the place. i was 99% back to normal with 8 days after the operation.
it really won't be that bad. hopefully, you like soup and applesauce though. if not, you'd better start. good luck.
