Hey. I'm 15, and one of my best friends cuts. She also says that she is "gothic". Are the two related? How can I help her? Can I?

You can try to help her... If you know there's something more going on than being all attention-get-ish, then that would probably be a reason for her cutting.

It really doesn't have to do with what social group you're in, just the feelings that one gets.

I'm kinda goth and kinda punk. Anywayz, a lot of the other punk and goth people at my school cut themselves but not ALL goths/punks do.

Eh, I guarantee that it's just a phase of her life.
I know that probably sounds naive, but that's usually the case, from my experience.
People try so hard to fit in. And unfortunately, a lot of kids feel like they need to be labled as something.
I'm not sure exactly why cutting and being goth is related. It shouldn't be, but I know several people that claim to be "goth" and yes, they do cut themselves.
And yes you can definitely help her ! That is probably why she is doing it in the first place. She wants attention. For the most part, that is the motive behind it. Talk to her about it and tell her that it doesn't only hurt her physically, it hurts you also. Situations like these can obviously lead to suicide.

Well being a goth and cutting yourself are two completely different things,but in some ways cutting can be related to different social groups who think its cool to cut,like goths I know who think it makes them look more 'so totally depressed'.
But if this is why your friend is doing it,then she is attention-seeking.If not,talk to her about it or tell a trusted adult. If you do the latter though,she'll probably dislike you for a while.But it'll be for her own good.

Yes sorry I did leave out that detail. I didn't want to give a big history lesson. But they did start in Germany and spread out to defeat Rome. My mistake.

ummm...The Goths singlehandedly burned down Rome, and set up kingdoms in Italy, Spain, Africa, Sardinia, and Corsica. But that is interesting, I did not know why the name Gothic applied to people. I thought it was the creepy ruins of "Gothic" mideval architecture.

If you’re going to put labels on things you should at least know what the labels mean. The first Gothic people were little German tribes who got tired of the Roman Empire so they secluded themselves. It has nothing to do with wearing black, worshiping devils, smoking anything or cutting.
Plus I had a friend who used to cut and she was a cheerleader. What social group you’re in makes no matter.
I don’t want to seem like a know-it-all, just labels bug me.

thats bull. ya dont have ta cut ta be a goth. an' if yer friend thinks that bein' a goth makes her cool, do me a favor an' tell her ta get a life. someone whos goth's gonna be real negative an' have a hopeless outlook on life. thas why they dress in black an' sing bout sucicide. they usually worship the 'cults an' the devil. not all goths are like that.

Cutting and being "gothic" are two totally different things. First of all, cutting is a form of self mutilation that is not healthy. You can get diseases, infections and all that wonderfully nasty stuff. It is a form of emotional release, but its not healthy.

Second, being "gothic" is a lot more then wearing black. If she claims to be 'gothic' it's probably just an attention/recognition thing.

As far as helping her goes: There are different ways you can go about it. If she is seeing a counselor, ask her to bring it up with him or her. Otherwise, ask her to tell her parents. If she refuses you may want to talk to her parents or counselor yourself. Cutting is dangerous and it can lead to other serious complications.

goths are just a group of people......some people cut if they are a goth cos they think they should to be a proppa goth its stupid really...they do it to be part of the crowd do ppl get me?

"Gothic" is a friggin label. Certain people don't and do cut. Everyone does what they feel. "Depressed" is a "Gothic" sorta feeling.

damn forums, always cuttin you off. ahem, so i was saying. you should ask her why she cuts and if she gives you some lame a s s answer like, 'because i get bored' you should tell her she's just bein stupid. because cutting is an art not just some boredom technic.

i dunno. not all ppl that are gothic cut. i dont think freelove is a gothic (are ya? ) i mean. my one friend isn't gothic and she used to cut. its just a person thing. if you take away her gothic attire, its probably not gonna do anything to stop the cutting.
