That's a disorder? I've always considered it a game to pass the time.

Speeding rituals up or hiding them does absolutly no good. If you speed a habit up, you are more likely to have to do it again. If you hide it and you're in treatment, how is that going to help you? If no one knows, then, honestly, tell someone. I suppose if you're habit/ritual etc. is dangerous, then replacing it would be a good idea, but otherwise I wouldn't try to switch compulsions.

I sort of have OCD like an eating dissorder, except I categorize my food so it doesn't change what I actually eat, just makes it frustrating. I used to categorize my Lucky Charms by marshmellow shapes, and eat the cereal first. I do this with Chex Mix, m&m's, ect. It's not life alteringly annoying, just time consuming. quote: My friends mom has OCD...I used to go there sometimes and she tried to clean me. Literally. Everytime I touched something, she asked if I wanted to wash my hands. Eventually, she took to me with a damp cloth.
I don't go there anymore.
heyyy... I knew a mom like that! She would carry around wet hand cloths in little baggies in her purse! Small world.

I think i use to have a small case of OCD, what i did was whenever a compulsion arose I forced myself (which was very very difficult) to ignore it and get on with the day, A little bit each dayy of this and then eventually i lost most of the compulsions good luck, michael

Oh please will you shut up about that already? I've seen you write that on at least 3 other threads and you don't like it then just dont read this one! obviously we like anough to reply so leave it alone. On another note, the replacing thing sounds interesting. I've had ocd since I was like 8 and finally went on meds (lexapro, and now prozac) about 2 years ago. If you were able to succesfully replace certain habits, it would be good but most people's habits are so ingrained in them that I dont think a new habit would bring any satisfaction.

I have OCD and my complusion is to wash my hands and throwing up(bulimia...my doctors say they go hand-in-hand). I sometimes find myself redoing homework because it isn't neat enough or counting when Im bored. I replaced ym hand washing with throwing up and that didn't get me anywhere. They are related because of the same type of obsessing and complusive thinking. I use to write a lot when I wanted to do one of my complusions or read. I usually just call a friend and talk till the time passes or till we have to go.

First of all, most OCD symptoms are not that hindering that you need to take pills. I don't think pills are the solution for problems that won't be a hinderance to your life. Now, if your OCD problems are starting to "change" your life, or something, then I suggest pills. But for simple things like walking on cracks and stuff, don't take pills. Why drug yourself up just so you can step on cracks? Who cares, don't step on them if it makes you more comfortable.

dude take my advice, pills good. normally pills can make things bad, but with ocd theyre heaven man. theyre not addictive, and have like no side effects, and theyre ussually a low doseage. ive had terrible experiences with ocd for years, and then i just told my parents about it and i got pills and ive been good for years. i take fluvoxamine, (luvox) stuff works like a charm, it gets rid of the compulsions no prob

pretty much every person has some sort of OCD. you may not realize it, but for the most part it is true. I don't know of any way to get rid of it. You almost have to get used to it. eventually it ends up just becoming a habbit, and you will probably do it for a long time, but i have always wondered about how to get rid of doing those things all the time too.
