Question:
Some people claim to be addicted to porn and/or sex. Some of these people say it's a psychological thing, that is learned, but some believe it's actually predisposed and/or genetic. Others say it's purely made up. Poll Question: Do you believe in such a thing as sex/porn addiction?

Now discuss this issue if it's affected you on a more personal level.

Choices:
Yes. It is learned through the media and other cultural phenomena.
Yes, but it's actually a predisposed condition that may simply be supported by the media and our culture.
No, this is just an excuse for people who like sex to not feel guilty about it.
Ha ha, he posted about sex! :)

well that's the thing porn stimulates people sexually so it feeds those urges and like any other addiction you want more and more. and what possible benefits could you reap by saying that you are addicted porn? as an actual addict I sure as hell don't see anything benefits or even help wise because of it.

Well, I definitely don't think it's made up...completely. Meaning, just like with ADD, many people take advantage of it and claim to have it in order to reap the benefits while there are also many people who really do have the problem.

Now, I have no clue as far as whether it is learned or genetic.

Even if it is learned, I really don't think it has to do with the media or any kind of culture but more with what kind of lifestyle you lead. Meaning, if you were one to have a lot of sex in high-school, perhaps, when this is not carried over into adult life, you feel as if you are addicted because something you were used to having is gone. That's just the first example that came to my mind. But I've just always thought blaming things on the media is a total cop-out. Yes, they may have some influence, but the media is not solely responsible for anything.

It seems a bit far-fetched to say that it is genetic - at least as far as porn is concerned. Porn is man-made and, while it incorporates internal desires, I don't think porn addiction could be genetic. Sex addiction I can see as having a more weighty argument simply because humans have had innate urges for sex forever. Sex is in our genetics, so to speak. But, even with sex, a genetic addiction seems far fetched to me.

Like I said, though, I really can't make up my mind one way or the other.

Everyone's objectified in pornography, and I don't have a problem with that.

People are complex beings: physical, intellectual, spiritual. Pornography is just isolating the physical component and admiring it. It's no more perverted than reading a thesis paper and only appreciating the writer for his/her mind.

If you can't admire a part of a person while realizing there's more to the person than you're admiring, there's probably something a little off with you to begin with. Especially if you start thinking of everyone of that gender as only having a body/mind/spirit. But honestly, I can't imagine anyone actually doing that, so I've come to believe "porn objectifies women" is just a cliche.

I've heard of this condition before and more than likely this is linked to the high ammount of pornography in our society. Personally I hate porn, because it objectifys women as sex objects adn conditions us to think this way. But I don't like the idea of these bigoted religous "rehab" classes. Forcing the idea of abstinence until marrage just to make up for the media's conditioning.

NOISEboard of the day?! WOW! Awesome!

Yogore, that's what I meant by the end part of my sentence... If people know you or you're willing to tell people everything about you (where you live, your full name, etc) then you shouldn't share EVERYTHING..

That seems like something Fina would say.

There's a lifetime movie about porn addiction and it seems blown way out of porportion. The kid would download porn videos on to his girlfriend's palm piliot at his swim team matches.

Thanks for the post, by the way. I definitely agree with you about people blaming everything on the media.

I definitely do believe that porn can be psychologically addictive, because anything can be psychologically addictive. I don't know if porn addiction is caused so much by the media, genetic disposition, or just random chance, but I'm reluctant to blame it on the media. Cowards who refuse to take a good look at human nature have been blaming the media for anything and everything for way too long now.

I can't say for sure, but I suspect the problem of pornography "addiction" may be an overblown one. Remember, addiction only sets in when true dependence develops and you start rearranging your life to accomodate the thing you're addicted to. I'm a porn fiend myself--in fact, a quick count tells me I have no less than 339 pornographic video clips on my hard drive--but I'm not a porn addict, because I've never broken a social date to look at porn, never missed an appointment because of porn, and my grades have never slipped because of porn. Also, I don't start getting irritable when I haven't seen any porn in a few days.

I think we have to be on guard against those who are quick to use the label "pornography addict," because many of them are probably anti-porn to begin with. I wouldn't be at all surprised if groups like Focus on the Family and The 700 Club were willing to declare you a pornography addict for looking at it twice out of mere curiosity.

Sex, unfortunately, I know far less about.

On YN (and probably most of cyberspace) you can be completely open about your personal life, as long as the address, phone number, school and real name are left out...
