Why is the fitness or lack of fitness thereof of the human body so important in today's society? I mean, there is so much weight prejudice running rampant in schools, even on this site! It is getting to the point where it is shaping people's morals, such as "Don't associate with fat and/or skinny people. They're immoral/dirty/mean!" What are your thoughts on this issue?

Peace,

Birdy cool

My entire life has been sports. I'm state and varsity soccer, and frosh lacrosse and basketball. I play on teams outside my school and train on my own time. I don't eat a whole lot, but what I do eat is very healthy.
And get this, I'm still fat. I'm not obese, but I am way over-chubby. Now with about 1,000-1,500 calories a day, and at least 6 hours of exercise, how am i still overweight?
simple, because thats just the way some people are. There are some people who are obese because of health problems.
But I think that the people who are obese because they don't exercise or eat right, those are the ones that should look into working out, and their doctor SHOULD say something. Their friends SHOULD say something, offer help. Its not a healthy lifestyle.

because no one ever looks at the personality of a person. All a person wants to see is a radiant smile, banging body, and nice hair sadly and some people dont have that but are nice but are over looked because of the impact beauty has put on the world

First thing is fitness is a completely different question from weight bias . And fitness is important . Even if you do obsess about it a little its cool .
But yeah the weight chart thing really sucks .
I'll put a new spin to this story . Ever since i can remember ive been playing sports everything from running to karate to basketball . Anythingg . Also ever since i can remember people dont believe me . Infact they look like they are itching to call a shrink . Im not anaroexic but i look like that sometimes . Now its a tug of war kinda thing . i do all kinda crazy endurance things just to prove that i can . Its like if i were a few pounds heavier you would believe me . maybe theres another chart i havent found which says you trek only if you are this heavy and so on .

I'll sleep when im dead .

Ok to clear up the bit about my model friend. She was aneorexic for a while. Now she eats and is back up to a healty weight. She has stopped modeling. She doesn't think about her body as being so important anymore. she realizes her personality is more important.

You know what I think needs to change?

Those old fashioned weight charts at the doctors office.

Weight is SO weird; I mean, I weigh more than you do (120) but generally wear a size 4 or so. But, according to my height, my weight is NOT as healthy as my pant size might suggest.

I know I'm not skinny, but I don't think I'm that over weight either. And it's disturbing to hear my mom hype at me about my weight or doctors who only look at the chart and not at my body. Who knows it better than anyone elseo n the planet? Me.

Sure, I'd like to loose some flab or tone up my tummy. But I've developed some of my own weight problems from people over-obsessing about something that's no concern of theirs.

Way to go girl! You rock and be sure to keep ON rockin'! Smile

See, this who "don't care what other people think" deal is a bunch of BS. Human society is based on interation and exchange of ideas.

And as for the whole weight/body issue. The way you maintain your body and your dress are representative of your personality. Granted, you can't control some things, but for the most part if you're fat, dirty, and dress sloppy you're lazy, eat too much, and don't pay attention to detail. That's just an example of course. But don't get off on saying "I'm fat and I'm happy with that." Why? You feel like crap half the time. Looks DO matter.

lol thats funny about the text books. but if its info what its about u realli should keep reading cos u'll find out how eating well will help u feel better physically n even emotionally. n if u're under stress, u should try yoga, or excercise n just remember eating well will help ur mood b more stable too. for me at least it works. when i skip breakfast or some meal cos im in a hurry or something, i end up getting mad so much more easily, not being able 2 focus or concentrate or anything n i end up so freggin stressed!! so anyway, just plz dont think dont punish ur self for being under stress or anything, do the it the other way around pamper yourself hehe Wink

oh n also, what happened with ur model friend? :s i was kinda confussed by that quote Razz

I used to have a friend who was a model. Of course she was superthin. Then as a sophomore in highshcool they give you the guidelines on how to be anorexic or bulimic withoout realizing it in your health book. I thought I could loose some weight so I tried it. I'd skip lunch, not eat much dinner, or breakfast. Just enough so my parents wouldn't catch on. This continued through my senior year in highschool and I still find myself doing it in times of high stress when I feel I can't contoll anyting else. Frown Smile

Our image of what is beautiful has been changed by the media alot. It used to be ok to have a little bit of a stomach. If you look at a picture of marlyn monroe (sp) she had a littly stomach and she was considered beautiful. Now you must be under 105 pounds. I do have a problem with people that dont have a medical condition that makes them obesce who think that we should mold to their needs just because they dont excersize and take care of themselves

I see health as important, not weight. Being too fat can lead to health problems like heart disease, and in that sense I suppose it is important. But as long as you're healthy, I don't think there's anything wrong with being a bit bigger. Sometimes fuller figures are really attractive.

beuty is in the eye of the beholder...which basically means theres always someone out there that likes "thicker/larger" women, but theres also the people that like the skinny ones...now because of society and the effect media has on it, most people have been molded to believe a certain body style is attractive, personally i dont like large people, but i dont like skinny people(sexuall attraction wise) but other factors do play into it, some people think certain people are gorgous at my school, sure they may have a nice body but the face really can ruin it all for me...thats not true for some people...i think if people open their minds a little, and not make desicions that are molded by their peers and society that they will realize, when they arent afraid their friends will make fun of them for thinking someones attractive, that they will realize there are alot more real women out there, not the magazine girls that annoy me oh so much...

i kno this is hard to believe but i am overweight (no not this part Wink ) and i exercise more than most of the people at my school!!

I LOVE Pe. I love to run. I run 2miles every morning. I take tae kwon do at least 2x a day (every class is an hour) 5x a week. when i get home i walk or go to the neighborhood gym with my friends. I stretch and do toning exercises before i go to sleep. i am still overwieght--but to tell you the truth i would rather have my big booty and boobies than to be flat! (no offense).

And also before you ask i do not go home and eat a extra large bag of chips or a gallon of ice cream i usually have an apple or celery(yummy Big Grin ).

i feel good even tho i am not a size 2! in fact i am a size 10. most ppl think i am muscular(i dont see it) so i am happy being my size and a proud 5'9" frame Razz

I think it's crazy that a girl has to be skinny and have big boobs to think she's beautiful. There is too much emphasis on all that in the media these days.

The negative label put on fat people is stupid, but I think it came about logically.

In the middle ages, it was actually sexually appealing to be fat. This was because during those time fattening food was scarce and only the rich could afford to eat it. The rich generally have power and powerful people are viewed by the lesser as being superior. Because of this, obesity was a good thing. Another thing was that being pale was a good thing because only the rich and powerful could afford to not work under the sun for their living.

In our current society, however, the tables have turned. Now fattening food is cheaper than healthy food. Thus, the rich and powerful are of moderate weight while those with less money must by the fattier foods. Also, only the rich have time to get out and tan while normal people must work in buildings. There seems to be a trend of the upper class to do whatever the lower classes can't afford to do and so that is the preffered thing.

This is just an idea and probably has some faults, but it's the best I can do of making sense of the issue.
