What are we supposed to call them United Statesers? They are from the United States of American and therefore Americans. No one calls Canadians Americans. We have a different and better title. Okay I am done now.
Why do you say "I'm from the states, what do people think of US AMERICANS?" America is a continent, not a country so you should find something else to call yourself, cause then that makes Mexicans, Guatemalans, and Canadians Americans too. It's just conceited and cruel to call yourself Americans, you do not make up the continent of America all by yourself although I admit the U.S is a big help financially to many countries. Think about it.
your beef is with the fact that american movie companies produce movies that also are rah rah america is #1? come on, lots of nations promote themselves as #1 in their respective entertainment industries. it's just that very few can market on the scale that america can. but if you made any effort to see movies besides $200 million budgeted ones, you could easily see how the american entertainment industry doesn't always hold a blinded image of america as the best.
there are plenty of movies that depict the mistakes and horrors of america's actions. see the movie "buffalo soldiers." see "dances with wolves". see "three kings". see "the siege." see the thousands of independent films that never make it to your cineplex but are in video stores - you'll find tons of titles that harp on the perceived weaknesses of america.
america does have problems and it does carry a presumptious attitude in many aspects. but producing a handful of jerry bruckheimer films is not a strong way of saying that.
That movie point is valid. How many dozen movies are there were the entire world is saved by Americans (Armegeddon, Independance Day, etc.) or about wars were everything the Americans do is right and good and the enemy does nothing but murder innocents and rape women. Everything seems to be about telling Americans that they are better than everyone else.
quote: i don't judge you guys by your movies.. i judged on how you like to be seen by other people...
That's called an image. And everyone -and country- does their best to obtain one of dignity and power. America is no different.
quote: like you always exagerate the point that you wer the good side of wars.. its like you never did anything so wrong against other countries...
Who always exaggerates about war? The United States gets involved in wars for the following reasons: -We were threatened by another country -We want to help another, less powerful country out (i.e. try to set up a puppet government in that country so we'd have control) -We are helping out an ally -We want something from that country (e.g. Liberia = diamonds, Iraq = oil, etc.)
quote: and how come in your ufo movies and stuff like that, its always there wen the aliens come, take me 2 your leader thing... you point to the usa president.... wow... your so great!!!
How did we get from the United States to aliens? What the hell are you talking about?
quote: it show that you think highly of yourselves...but anyway, its your movies, you can make yourselves look good if you want right? ehehheeh
How can you make a direct correlation between aliens and the impression the United States has on other countries? Every country strives to make themselves look more powerful and advanced than any given country. Why would we want to make ourselves look less than we are? We're the world's only superpower, and that comes with baggage - both good and bad.
i don't judge you guys by your movies.. i judged on how you like to be seen by other people...
like you always exagerate the point that you wer the good side of wars.. its like you never did anything so wrong against other countries...
and how come in your ufo movies and stuff like that, its always there wen the aliens come, take me 2 your leader thing... you point to the usa president.... wow... your so great!!! *sarcastically it show that you think highly of yourselves...but anyway, its your movies, you can make yourselves look good if you want right? ehehheeh
quote: you like to expose your selves always as the good guys... (we always see that in your movies, its sick)
Don't judge the country by what you see in the movies. That's ridiculous. It's like judging every female's looks by the famous actresses you see in the same movie. Geezus.
After reading every single post on this thread, I realized that I have something wierd about me. I am both a Canadian and American citizen and live in neither country. Well, you can say I live in the States but the place where I live in is a territory of the US, but governs its own self. Well anyways, here is my opinion on the US. Right now I have absolutely nothing on Americans. I think they are cool. And I enjoy everything the AMericans do. But the thing I don't like is that the US as a country is very nosy. Yes, nosiness has helped, but it has also made things worse. I also feel like the US can be really stuck up sometimes. The impression the US instills upon me is that they are the absolute strongest in the world and that they keep rubbing that fact into people's faces. It's like they say, if a country hurts the US, they will be hurt more. That's the impression I get. Don't get me wrong, I like the people of the United States, I guess I would consider myself an American, but still, that's the impression I get, thousands of miles away from the mainland.
For the record IT IS NOT LEGAL TO SMOKE WEED IN CANADA!!! Posession of small amounts of weed has been decriminalized meaning that if caught you will pay a fine but it will not go on your criminal record. Large amounts, dealing and growing is still criminal. Everyone has been misinformed and I am trying to set the record straight.
Burgermeister, thank you for the corrections. I see your a loyal Canadian yourself. But Luvabug, I was just trying to make a point. My point is that the u.s. is more restrictive and conservative in their laws than most other countries.
quote Canada the drinking age is 19, in France, its 16. I don't drink myself, but people should be able to choose what they wanna do. In Canada, smoking weed is legal. ( I don't smoke weed either.)
ummm u want these rights??? most of the youth of the US drink and smoke pot anyways... so if its made legal itll only screw us up even more.
Actually, in different provinces in Canada, the drinking age is different. In Alberta, for example, the legal age is 18, while in British Columbia, it's 19. Oh, and pot isn't legal yet. Though, there is, I believe, proposed legislation to decriminalize it... you know, not legalize it, but you'd only get a ticket for possession of 30 grams or less.
I agree with Audreee 100%. Damn right. To reply to luvabug's question, In Canada, western europe, and most other first and even second world countries, you can drink at a younger age. In Canada the drinking age is 19, in France, its 16. I don't drink myself, but people should be able to choose what they wanna do. In Canada, smoking weed is legal. ( I don't smoke weed either.) In most of these countries prostitution is legal. america is very restrictive and uptight when it comes to their laws, to whereas other countries are much more lax in theirs.
i hope no one will be offended with what i am about to say.. i just want to be honest of what i really think cos i don't want to act all plastic...(this is my view of america in general) 1. you have too much pride.... 2. it's all about you.. 3. you think your the coolest people in the world 4. you like to expose your selves always as the good guys... (we always see that in your movies, its sick) 5. you are not sincere with the countries you help.. 6. think to highly of your selves...... 7. you make other countries feel like **** most of the time..
i'll explain my opinion next time if anyone asks.. im sory if all i had 2 say was negative.. i'll try to give the positive nxt time..gotta sleep.. gudnyt..
You just desribed rich, white, established America. Not the ghettos. Not the projects. Not even most middle class. (maybe some trailer parks you did) ).
I do agree with you that america need to let us have more freedoms. We are not perfect. And yes SOME of us do get arrogant.
But NOT EVERYBODY (capitalization not in anger ). yes we do need to change--alot. but i still respect my second country.
Ps good luck with Canada. I'm trying to get to South Korea! Ahn Yeng!
I personally don't like america. I wish I was never born here. As a matter of fact, I'm currently trying to figure out how Imma move to Canada. In terms of standard of living, america is great. But americans are arrogant. They think that they are soo much better than everyone else. americans are intolerant toward other nationalities and toward anyone who has an alternate opinion that differs from the mainstream. They think that america is the only country in the world that values freedom and democracy, when ironically in certain other countries, you actually have more freedom there than here in america. I get angry every time I see the flag, the white house, and the statue of liberty. I can't wait to get the hell outta here. This country sucks!
