canadians landed and fought at juno beach during the normandy landing in WWII and allowed a continuous front to exist between juno and gold beach. canadians also penetretated deeper into france on D-Day than any other allied land troops.

canadian troops marched to the 38th parallel to assist british troops during the korean war.

canadian troops served during our war in afghanistan - and several were killed by american pilots.

luvabug - your attitude and ignorance pretty much sum up why so many people hate america. i hope that you never run for any sort of public office.

whether u guys hate Bush or not, we have the power to nuke your country to kingdom come, the only reason you guys are never in wars is b/c no ones gonna start sh*t with you knowing that we are right below you and we'll nuke the sh*t outta them too. before you guys go sayin how bad busg is, think about our military first, and then your military, o wait...you dont have one...or at least one that would be able to beat Iraq or some other country with NUKES but then again...do they even have electricity up there??????i woudnt know...i hardly even remember canada is up there sometimes

if you go abroad you'll see that lots of people hate america, although many of them like americans. i've travelled through europe and africa and have had arguments with lots of people.

many people view america as overbearing and destructive. look, to everyone who can't stomach criticism about america: there's a lot about america that is not peaches and cream. we enforce our markets and values on entire cultures; we have constructed "governments" to suit our market forces; we have participated in illegal and terrorist acts against innocent people in almost every continent.

that being said, i believe that it's inevitable that america should be viewed this way. there's no way to be the strongest superpower, both militarily and economically, without shaping the world as you see fit. you can't bow to others wishes at every outing, you can't simply ignore the capitalistic culture that raised america to the global forefront. you cannot be the richest or most powerful nation without being the lightning-rod for hatred. it's dumb to direct your hatred at the poor; it's always acceptable to direct your hatred at the rich.

now, with all of that being said, i believe that america has done a better job than most other nations would hypothetically do. honestly. i believe that "equality" is a relatively good value to push onto other people. for me, it sure beats rampant segregation by race, religion, or gender as practiced in other nations. but we still have to accept the fact that our "equality" is a western european bias - you cannot simply assume that our version of equality is accepted as the gold standard for morality. and our attempts to push that standard - usually as a cover for developing new markets or converting other countries into an exploitable source of resources - are often not appreciated.

take somalia for example. a total debacle in many ways, not least in that we were indirectly responsible for creating an environment that such brutality could take place. we also turned tail after the marines were killed. but we still sent those marines in. i believe that at least 60% of the rest of the world would not have sent those troops in; i believe that at least 60% of the rest of the world would have been content to set up a scenario where warlords brutalized innocents and then not been at all willing to lend military aid. so in that sense, i think that america is conducting itself better than most countries would if given the chance to be the most powerful nation on the planet. it's just that our actions and their consequences have such far reaching effects that our mistakes and scandals are that much bigger than most other nations.

america has tons of problems, and not least is the presumptious attitude that we can set the standard for everyone else in all things. and we are also a very naive and insulated people for belonging to such a rich culture - how many of us are not well versed in our own history, and i'm not just talking about the cut-and-dried textbooks we read in grades 1-12. how many of us accept the government's word at face value? how many of us cannot fathom why people hate us? too many.

i understand that it's hard to understand why others hate us when we individually often have no hate for other nations or cultures. that's why you have to see beyond the 6 o'clock news, you have to take it upon yourself to try to be educated beyond what is spoonfed to us. keep abreast of the news. listen to other nations - they're not all lying about us. learn about other nations.

and on that note, the prime minister (or canadian leader, i'd avoid the term ruler) is jean chretien, or chrestien, i can never remember exactly. but if you read the newspaper you should recognize it when you see it.

G!

you are cheating, you aren't in Canada right now! Smile
Do you have dual citizenship?

Anyway, I was trying to be nice in asking my questions...I don't know what we ever did to Canada, but whatever. I tried to avoid the shooting remark also. But I honestly have to say, it's true...I don't even know who the president/prime minister/whatever of Canada is.

And I don't notice any derogatory reports about Canada on the US media, yet everytime I blink Canada is taking a big crap on us...what's the dilly?

Not to mention the majority of the oil we purchase is from Canada, we do a huge part to support the Canadian economy...

US citizen, hated and proud

i don't have a problems with canadians either...but i do have a problem with anyone who says our president needs to be shot. isn't it weird though you jump to the defense of the canadians yet the comment of shooting our president barely registers?

A lot of this confuses me. I agree, but then I don't. We should definitely not be portraying Canadians in a bad way, because I think that you guys are really good people. I've been up to Canada and the people there are really nice. I also do wonder what it is exactly that you have against our president. Not that I agree with everything that our government does, because I don't, but what is really so bad about him?

that stupid canadian on here sounded a little bitter...could it be because canadians are so useless no one even knows they are up there. i recently took a trip to canada, and heard people express the fear that they are being taken over by the US. i'm sure the international community would worry, if anyone realized canada exsisted in the first place. sure, there are people who hate bush, but there are many more people who love him, who rate him right next to reagan. hate him or love him, people know who he is. no one knows who rules canada..because it doesn't even matter. but then what do you expect, they are french. and maybe you should think next time before you say the leader of the free world needs to be shot...eh?

do you think Canada portrays our president negatively? Or do you think he is justly portrayed for who he is?

I have nothing against Americans, it's your current president that I don't agree with. I think it's v. important, though, to separate the people from the gov't. BTW, I'm Canadian.
