smoking cigrattes is disgusting. Part of the reason I would never do cigagratetes, besides the fact that they are absolutely disgusting, i play travel hockey and soccer and if i smoked my stamina would go down. Smoking doesn't only kill you it makes life worse for you and the people around you who have to inhale the crap that comes out of death in a tube

I am now 3 1/2 weeks without a cigarette, despite working at a nightclub! Yay me! What's twisted is in the last week I have had 2 dreams about smoking cigarettes where I woke up feeling disappointed with myself because I smoked. Crazyness.

Um... Nice try with that one speedy, but you're a little off from the national average. Most smokers don't realize that within 5 years of spending their 'cigarette money', they could buy a brand new car.

Here are some quotes from famous people and what they have to say about smoking:
Smoking kills. If you’re killed, you’ve lost a very important part of your life - Brooke Shields
Everybody smokes! Models, actresses, everyone! Don’t they realize that it’s gross? I understand that it’s an addiction, but it still pains me to see my friends do it - Kirsten Dunst
Look to your health and if you have it, praise God and value it next to conscience, for health is the second blessing that we mortals are capable of, a blessing money can’t buy - Izaak Walton

Yes, smoking kills. I encourage people that would support FDA regulation of tobacco to go to http://www.acscan.org/site/pp.asp?c=cnJHJIPuB&b=200325There will be a link to "Take Action" on the right. Please fill out the information and a letter will be sent to Congress explaining your support of FDA influencing the future of tobacco in America. If you want, too, you can put in a personal message with the letter. PS- the letters are being sponsored, I suppose, by the American Cancer Society.

Even though people have the decision to make their own mistakes some people need to take a step back and look at the big picture. Even if smoking only brings you to an early death it could effect your relationships with your children, spouse, and grandchildren. my grandfather died from smoking complications long after he quit. I don't want to sound like I'm whining b/c I was very young when he died and I didn't know him that well But it really hit my dad hard. Just know that the choices you make in life effect more than just you.

I am selfish. I really don't care if you smokers out there feel like endangering yourselves. I do care, however, when you choose to endanger and inconvenience me.
Maybe I am an "inconsiderate *******". Maybe you, like chikibebe, think I should "get the hell over [myself]." Well, if that is the case I am sorry. Perhaps I can try to explain my behaviour.
Let us start with the obvious. Second-hand smoke. Whether or not you, like me, believe it is dangerous, it is pretty damn disgusting. There is nothing I hate more than walking down to my bus stop and getting a lung full of someone's cigarette smoke. You may think it relaxes you (in the long term it really has the opposite effect) but it certainly does not relax the innocent people who have to breathe it in every day on their way home from school. Cigarette smoke gives me a headache and makes me feel nauseas. I am not alone in this. Thankfully, in Australia, smoking is banned in restaurants and cafes, but I still cannot enjoy a meal outside without having to put up with smokers causing me to feel ill.
If this is not enough, when these same smokers are hospitalised with cancer and heart disease, I will be helping foot the bill. Taxpayers should not have to deal with the consequences of your addiction. Why should we non-smokers, who already have to put up with your disgusting habit, and then be forced help pay your hospital bills when you develop cancer. You may not care about the lengthy list of nasty things that come of smoking, but when it costs me money, I certainly care.
Moreover, what of any friends or family who have managed to put up with your noxious fumes thus far? I am sure they would be upset to see you die a slow and painful death at an early age. I would be angry if one of my loved ones died early just because they ignored the health risks involved in smoking. Smoking doesn’t just harm humans, either.
As has been mentioned in previous posts, large cigarette companies perform cruel tests on animals. Something that hasn’t really been discussed in other posts, however, is the effect smoking and cigarette production has on the environment. Cigarette butts are becoming a huge problem. It is estimated that several trillion are littered worldwide each year. Many forest fires are guessed to have been caused by someone throwing a cigarette butt out of the window of their car or dropping it as they walk by. Some smokers, while intelligent enough not to throw a burning object into a highly flammable area will still drop their butts on the street. Not only does this look bad, but it is harmful to the environment. These butts end up in gutters from which they find their way into waterways, polluting them. Just one cigarette butt in two galleons of water is deadly to water fleas, a crucial link in the ecosystem. Cigarette filters have also been found in the stomachs of animals who mistook them for food.
Even if you have the courtesy to properly dispose of your cigarette you are killing the planet. Deforestation is already a huge problem in many places and cigarette production is making it worse. Forests are being stripped to make space to grow tobacco and trees are logged to create paper for the production of cigarette cartons.
I know I am selfish. I know that by wanting to be able to breathe freely; to protect families of smokers from hurt; to stop animals being tested on and killed; to see my tax money go to those who did not bring their misfortune upon themselves and to save the lungs of the earth – our forests, I am infringing upon the “rights of a smoker”. Well, guys, I’m sorry. Maybe one day I’ll stop being so self-centered.

quote: Not really. Because asthmatics aren't putting anyone's life in danger by going outside their homes. They also don't have a choice on being allergic/asthmatic to something; smokers have the choice to smoke or not.
Smokers are putting noone life in danger if they smoke outside of their own homes. Show me a study that shows that second hand smoke has caused any signifigant increase in public health risk. With all due respect, it is not the governments job to make life convienent for asthmatics. The fact that asthmatics have a health condition still does not put their rights above those of everyone else. This is not the same installing a ramp for the disabled. You're asking millions of people to signifigants change and restrict their everyday life. If asthmatics have no choice in the matter, is the best answer really to take the choice away from the smoker also? We do not ban or restrict the use of peanuts because there are many people who are deadly allergic to them. I know two people like that. They have to watch everything they eat, and make sure any restaraunt or place they eat, or could come in contact with peanuts won't kill them. Like you they must carry medicine with them in case of emergency. Government buildings, schools, city parks and such, I don't have as much of a problem. You can't drink alcohol there either, they should attempt to be substance free zones. However, smoking bans are going well past this. They've completely circumvented the rights of private buisness owners, and some are talking about banning smoking everwhere but the home itself. And the reason for this hysteria is that smoking has been demonized by anti-smoking extremists. This reminds me of another situation we dealt with a few decades ago:
"Do you realize that fluoridation is the most monstrously conceived and dangerous communist plot we have ever had to face?"
