I consider myself to be in "good shape" so here is what i would suggest.
Food: Dont eat a lot of snacks, try to stick to 3 meals a day and make sure that breakfast is the largest. Lots of americans use snacks as a pastime because we have so much food here and not a lot to do.
Exercise: It is hard to get yourself to work out. The best way to do it is a schedule. If you are just starting try once a week. (sunday evening is a good time) slowly work your way up until you are working out more days a week.
Sleep: Although sleep isnt directly related to being out of shape i find that when i dont sleep enough I get lethargic which in turn leads to eating a lot and sitting around. Try to get at least 7 hours of sleep a night. Some people even need more, so figure out your individual needs.
Every body is different so you will have to play around a little to find what makes you feel right. Also it is hard to start all of this at once I would suggest changing your factors one at a time. Goodluck.
