I know, this is getting out of control. Some people say "It's for health" but that's never true. It's because the media puts pressure on society to be stick thin. Unless you are obese, you should never go on a diet. Because you are just feeding into the media and it's propaganda.

First, i will admit that i have been partially driven to "look good" because of societies standards...but that is only a small reason in why I excercise and try to stay in my best physical condition.

I have found that the more I work out, and get myself into shape, I seem to have more control over my body, I feel refreshed, and more focused.

Also, the more balanced (key word there) muscle i put on my body, the less stress there is on my joints, neck, and back. My dad has had quite a few problems with his back, so I am trying to make sure that my lower and upper back is in its peak condition so that I do not have to worry about it as much.

Perhaps it is an "obsession" that I have with my body...but I find the benefits I am reaping from it very rewarding.

The way you look in sociey today is very important. We,society today, are programmed to believe certain things such as:
we always have to look good
the perfect size is a 6
we have to be beautiful
Constantly we,teenage girls, are pressured to look, dress or act a certain way which in my opinion sucks a*s. ( can we cuss? ) Anyways to answer your question, the issue of being thin is important because the media says so. The media sucks. mad

Why is it that when someone is a bit overweight, that they aren't physically fit???

Just a thought

I think that it's the media who is making everyone worry about their weight. There are so many skinny people in the media world these days and that's who people (especially the young kids) look up too. Sure there are some who are more well-rounded in the media but they aren't as famous as the ones who are like super thin. Also notice that is it always the skinny people who are the popular ones on tv, they are the ones every other character looks up too and wish were the same. wink

I don't like it when people make fun of...big people but I do want to be in top physical condition. Scientists say if you are physically fit and remain so you will live longer. As a matter of fact I have a lot of big people in my family, and I love every one of them. I can have lots of fun with them and they are regular people.

I don't get the big deal about why we are all supposed to be 30lbs underweight to be beautiful. I was bulemic for four years. Sure, I was really thin and boys liked me and girls said they wished that they had my will power because "you look so good." I liked that at the time but I never felt I was good enough. I'm 5'9" and at the height of my bulemia I weighed 93lbs. I was sick alot of the time, I was constantly concerned with weight, I got a lot of mixed messages from friends "you should eat more than one meal a week, but you look so good,... wow, I wish I could fit into a size 0 like you" I even did amphetamines to stay extremely thin. It was pathetic and disgusting. I don't understand the emphasis on being thin. People are dying trying to wear smaller sizes. I don't know what ever made me so stupid. I now weigh about 120lbs. I am much healthier, I wear a size 7, which in some stores I have trouble finding. I can concentrate and stay awake all day. Life is much better now, even if I don't inspire envy in my girlfriends. I realize now that someone who is overwight or a normal healthy weight is just as beautiful as someone who is a size 2. No one wants to be judged on their looks, I think that society should focus on other things. Appearance is a small part of the total person. Health is one thing, but the majority of young people (from my experience w/ friends, family, etc.), especially girls, aren't thinking of health when they diet and exercise excessively.

Hi Birdy Girl, I've enjoyed lots of your posts.
I had a friend for many years as a young child who was overweight. But, she is one of the sweetest people on the earth! I don't know why
people make such a big deal over being obese.
It can be a risk to your health, but that is no reason to judge how they are on the inside.
I do see changes I can make myself.
Not joking about anyones weight, even if they seem to be laughing about it.
Not judging someone by looks.
And many other things.
I hope I didn't offend anyone...if I did I wasn't trying.
Keep up the good topics birdygirl!

I think that fitness is important, because excercise helps you think more clearly, makes your body work and function better, and makes you overall healthier. As for weight prejudice and such, it's not necessary and is rude. However, America does have somewhat of an obesity problem.
