quote: I back Bush 100% on this one. AIDS and other STD's are caused because of "safe sex".
WOW. That is about the stupidest thing i have ever heard. This is the exact opposite of the truth. The reason why AIDS and other STD's are so wide-spread is because people don't practice safe sex, not because it!!! The reason condoms are given out and sold everywhere is so we can stop horrible diseases like that!! AIDS can't get through a condom. I would seriously like to know where you get your facts, since you seriaosly think that condoms are only 45% effective. Have you seen any actual proof? Do you really think people would continue using them if they were that innefective? Next time before you start lecturing us like that, please make sure you have your facts straight at least.
quote: Condoms have been known not to work over 60% of the time.
Not to work for what? STDs? Pregnancy? When used correctly condoms work 97% of the time efefctivly preventing pregnancy. When used incorrectly, condoms are only 86% effective.
Oral Birth controls are easier to use and more realiable. There really isn't a way to take a pill incorrectly. Oral birth controls work 99+% of the time against unwanted pregnancy.
Laboratory tests show that no Sexually transmitted Infection, even HIV, can be passed through a latex condom. In consistant condom users, less than 1% were infected with an STI.

I think that Absinence is good, in theory. It is unrealistic to expect that an entire country will stop having sex when they don't want a child just because of extra effort being put on abstinence. By limiting methods of birth controal, Bush is creating unwanted babies that migh end up being aborted (i'm pretty much pro-life, so abortion to me is a bad thing) or raised by someone that is not ready to have a child, as well as spreading STDs. I know that, I, personally would not have sex untill i'm older (atleast out of high school), but i'm also pretty sure that this is NOT the case with many people.
i totally agree with whats your saying. i wouldnt have sex till im out of high school either... and limiting protection is only going to make people want to have sex more because it is "forbidden"

but thats assuming that every person in the world wants to get married and have kids? why should that be the only option in life?? if human life were so limited we might as well be our own slaves, forced tolive a life decided on by somebody else.

Stop sleepin with everyone you come across! If you just wait for your husband/wife (of the opp. sex mind you), there would be no problem of AIDS. Condoms, when applied properly, are about 45% affective. And birth control is a weak excuse to have free sex.
What if your spouse got an STD like herpes from a non-sexual thing like sharing a sode? or because of a medical mistake? What if your wife or you couldnt get pregnant because it would kill her. If you didnt use condoms and she did get pregnant, there goes your wife...
Things like these happen more often than you would think. My mother almost died of a miscarriage because of a uterus problem. If not for birth control, she might be dead now.. Do you suggest that she simply not have sex with her husband ever again because of the health risk???
quote:Originally posted by Riaan87: This is an interesting subject... I live in South-Africa, a country which has been greatly affected by HIV/AIDS. The problem with promoting safe sex is that you are also promoting sex. Maybe people need to learn discipline. We could debate ont this topic for years and years, the simple thruth is that abstinence is better that safe-sex, then there is NO risk invlolved...
I completely agree with you... but you have to realize that there would be wayyyyy more people in your country with AIDS/HIV if condoms were made illegal. abstinence is an unrealistic option. Sex is a basic human need and desire. People will do it regardless of the risk, but now that we have ways to protect ourself we should take advantage of them! Promoting safe sex isnt promoting sex... its just a message saying": to be totally safe, dont have sex. but if you're going to, use a comdom and be smart about it".
Actually, condoms are 94% effective... I would know, I work at an AIDS Foundation. Having sex without being married doesnt mean that you will not find sex to be meaningful. And even if you did, the issue at hand is whether the government needs to be controlling every American's private life. What happens behind closed doors between a man and a woman or a man and man or a woman and a woman is completely their decison to make. by limiting birth control and std control, our government would not be promoting abstinence. Think back to the time of Prohibition. People didnt just stop drinking alcohol because it was illegal, they found other ways to get around the law and made their own alcohol and got themselves killed. Likewise, if condoms were made illegal and abortion banned and morning after pills prohibited, the only difference there would be is that alot more unwanted babies would be born, STD would spread a hell of alot quicker, and some innocent women might die because of a defective birth they couldnt abort or because they would try to abort themselves illegally. Thats what happened in the 50's, and millions of women died each year because they had no choice of what to do with their own bodies. If you want more info on this you should watch the movie If These Walls Could Talk...
Since it seems you like statistics a whole bunch... think about this: 71% of men are against legal abortions. 100% of them will never be pregnant. Personally, I dont think its any politicians right to decide what i do with my reproductive parts...
Abstinence is cool in theory, but its not realistic. Bush is tryng to make law based on an ideal that will only get us hurt and/or killed.

This world (99.9% Hollywood) is so messed up with what they think sex should be like, it's crazy. Condoms have been known not to work over 60% of the time. Why take the risk and mess up your life? Abstinance is definitely the way to go if you wanna live your full teen years without worrying about being pregnant or hoping your actions last nite didn't get her pregnant. Be responsible in your actions.

Here I go...Scream my lungs out and try to get to you...you are my only one, I let go....but there's just no one who gets me like you do...you are my only, my only one...~Yellowcard
I, personally am really into waiting until marriage to be sexually active.....so abstinence is very realistic for me.....but I think for a lot of people, it just won't happen. It's better to be able to have biurth control, condoms...etc.
Jeez, I think Abstinence is unrealstic. If you take a god dam* look around you would see a whole bunch of ***** teens. And thats the truth. Most people don't even pay any attention in health when the talk about Abstinence. It's human nature to have sex, and its how eveyone is made. And banning condums and the pill is THE stupidest thing I have ever heard of. What about rape? What about those of us who arn't mairred, or who don't want to have kids? Tell me that Bush!?!?!?
I think practicing abstinence is very important. Its the only sure way to gurantee you won't contract AIDS or any other STDs that are harmful. In today's world, sex is a casual thing. We see it in movies, music videos and other places that influence us. Its no longer treated like something that should be shared with the person you will [most likely] spend the rest of your life with. As much as I support abstinence, I disagree completely with what Bush wants to do with contraceptives. Although young people are being educated in schools about having casual sex, it won't stop people from still doing it. That's why we need to have condoms and morning after pills available.
I back Bush 100% on this one. AIDS and other STD's are caused because of "safe sex". Everyone is trying to come up with a cure for AIDS, well... I have it. Stop sleepin with everyone you come across! What if your spouse has an STD? What if you and your spouse decide you aren't ready for kids? Don't you deserve to know what kind of protection is out there?
I think that it is an important issue to address! i think it should be talked about in school and how you should remain abstinent and not have sex until you are married so that you marriage will remain strong and you can't compare your husband/wife to someone else that you have had sex with.
Abstenence is all that needs to be practiced. See we need to be taught to save sex not safe sex. Is 5 minutes of "fun" worth an STD an abortion an adoption or may be even a death! Yes we do have sexual needs but we do have self control to keep our mind and body from things that might spark that desire that is only to be met in marrige! You dont have to have sex we all can wait. See the problem with this society it shows sex as something you can share with any one and every one even people of the same gender! There is no morals. see safe sex is good and all, but does it really keep you safe? think about it. Condoms humm you can still get pregnant, it is only protective 94% of the time and you can still get an STD how is that safe? Oh because it takes the risks down a little bit. Birth control you can still get an STD, the side effects are horrible, blood clots, tumors, ulcers, and a lesser chance of having a baby when you want one.
Todays society shows:
You can have sex as much as you want with who ever you want it is ok but if you dont have protection oh your bad.
Abstenence is for sissys you have to have sex to be accepted.
If you have sex and get an abortion that is fine if you got it before the 3rd month is wasnt really a baby you were just a little pregnant ( you can identify how the baby looks after the 10th week)
People abstenence is the only way to stay 100% safe from all STD's and prenancy. I think we should all stay abstenent for our future and for an example to our peers and an example to our next generation and generations to come
I personally believe in abstinence. I do not plan on having sex anytime soon. but what about those people who are having sex now? Dont they get the right to choose protection or not? Its not fair to those who use protectin beacuse they have sex. ITs a free country right? We can do what we want, and if its sex that we want but we dont want to have a kid we should have the option of protection.
Banning contraceptives is not the way to encourage abstinence. Sex is a personal affair and the government should not interfere in it. A better way to make children and adolescents sexually responsible is to have sex ed classes in school, so that people know what they're getting into and can have safe sex.
As for the ridiculous "let's do away with contraceptives coz then people won't have casual sex" argument, would you call on the government to don red and take over all private property Soviet-style so that people won't be tempted to steal? And people WILL continue to have sex, with or without contraceptives, so isn't it infinitely better to have safe sex?
I'm totaly for the idea of Abstinece, but one thing I want to say if you think it is a "when you're ready type of thing." Well I won't yell and get all mad at someone it is just that if you're ready for sex you should also be ready for Kids.
