I just wanted to add to what I said on 17 July: My first attempt was with a patch. It gave me really weird dreams. It was Nicorrette gum that brought me success; I didn't want to give the impression that I quit cold-turkey.

I know that my experience with smoking is rather unusual, in that I didn't even start until I was thirty years old. (I know I'm too old to even be here at Youthnoise, so just think of me as a visitor from Middleagenoise.) I smoked for about ten years, and believe me, that's plenty of time in which to become strongly addicted. I did manage to quit, however, and it will be ten years this coming Sept. 1 since I have had a cigarette. If anyone is interested, I would like to offer a little advice on how to make quitting less difficult (I don't think there's anything that can make it easy). Remember that a really intense craving for a cigarette will subside in a few minutes, so try to hang in there. I always reminded myself that a cigarette was not about to light itself, and than place itself between my lips, all on it's own. If I didn't do it, then it wouldn't be done, and I couldn't, therefore, end up smoking one. It helped me to think about it in those terms. If you fail in your attempt to cease smoking, don't feel that you are a failure, or punish yourself with guilt. Most people fail on their first attempt to quit. I didn't succeed until my third try, though I don't really count my second attempt, because my heart really wasn't in it; which leads me to my final bit of advice: Your heart has to be in it. You have to really want to quit. Otherwise your chances of kicking this most addictive, and most deadly of all drugs, aren't very good.

It's a terrible habit, but I do smoke. It had experimental beginnings, and now it's an addiction. I used to do it to calm down, forget about things, relieve stress, or just when I felt overwhelmed. I probably still do it now when those feelings come along, but it's less thought about becasue it's apart of my routine. I'm am now in the process of quitting smoking cigarettes. I have a few people keeping me in line, but I still smoke "Mary Jane" because I really don't want to stop. I don't promote or recommend it. I would never do it in public, because I don't want to be responsible for anyones experimentation. Well, I guess that's all I had to say.....for now.

My dad's best friend went to a "stop smoking retreat" and basically, they told him "the urge for a cigarette will pass whether you smoke one or not" and that helped him stop for like 5 months...mind you he tried everything else, that thought was the most helpful though...

I don't smoke...I think it is disgusting and just second hand smoke gives me enough respiratory problem... Looking at how much time, money and effort thousands put into trying to quit is a good enough reason not ot start.

i started smoking when i was in 5th grade, the reason i did was because i had a mother who was mean, rude, and no matter what everything had to be her way. She was over-controling and just a flat out *****. and to her i HAD to be perfect to protect her reputation. i know thats not a reallly good reason, but its my reason and my choice. I am now a sophmore in high school and still smoking. what can i say

I started b/c my life was going down the drain and I was hoping to find something to waste the time and keep me calm
I quit though b/c it wasnt working the way I needed it too
I know that a lot of ppl dont quit (including my brother) b/c it really does require a life change. Even his morning routine includes a newport and he would have to find something else to fill that time.

Well, your lucky to be one of the few people who can stop. But i guess it suprises me that peer presure was your reason. You should have known that you didnt need to smoke to fit in! A job well done from me.. lets hope you dont start again!

Mmkay...I found one. But only one. And it's rare. I was reading The Perks of Being Wallflower (VERY good, by the way) and the narrator has this thing where he gets really worked up and needs to calm down. He eventually does so by smoking. And smoking is much better than physically and mentally freaking out, in my opinion. But he still should find a way to counter this by doing something not so harmful.
