okay wow, if smoking is a good way to "relieve boredom" then you have no imagination. There are billions of other healthy things to do besides suck on a cancer stick. And "improve social interactions"? what do you mean by that? Those 5 [ignorant] reasons to smoke dont balance out the hundreds of health probelms you get by smoking. Heres just a few risks you get by smoking: -diminished sense of smell and taste -chronic bronchitis -heart disease -frequent colds -increased heart rate and blood pressure -"smoker's cough" -premature and more abundant face wrinkles -cancer of the mouth, larynx, pharynx, esophagus -gastric ulcers -emphysema -cancer of the lungs, pancreas, cervix, uterus, and bladder -passing on second-hand smoke to your spouses, children, coworkers and friends and since I have so much free time, I googled "smoking facts" and I got these: -research has shown that smoking reduces life expectancy by 7 to 8 years -300 people a day die in the UK due to smoking related illnesses -on average, each cigarette shortens a smoker's life by around 11 minutes -more than 400,000 deaths in the US each year are from smoking-related illnesses -Among infants to 18 months of age, secondhand smoke is associated with as many as 300,000 cases of bronchitis and pneumonia each year. -Pregnant women who smoke are more likely to deliver babies whose weights are too low for the babies' good health. If all women quit smoking during pregnancy, about 4,000 new babies would not die each year. As you can see daveman, there are a lot more risks than there are good things from smoking. As a female, I would never want to put my future children at risk for death at birth or respiratory probelms later on in their life. I dont want my life to be shortened by seven to eight years because I decided to waste my money on something that is not only putting me at risk, but others around me. Okay so I'm done now. Hope yall enjoyed reading that....

Daveman, but as you can see: the results don't balance out--the negative reprocusions are much worse.

Come on, if thats all smoking did why would anybody smoke? Smoking also: increases alertness from nicotine, help relaxation, relieve boredom, improve social interactions, plus a mild euphoria.

quote: yeah I'll probably die
wow...that seems like a good enough excuse to quit right there... I've never smoked and dont intend to. I think its disgusting. I know many people that do and it grosses me out. All smoking does is gives you bad breath (which is horrible if you want to kiss someone because my ex boyfriend smokes and it was disgusting kissing him...), yellow teeth, costs a fortune, and way too many health probelms. The only thing I can say sexygurl is to give your friend (or get her to buy) a lot of gum and mints to suck on in place of a cigarette. Also give them something to do with their hands - like tieing knots or a stress ball. While my dads friend was trying to quit smoking, he never knew what to do with his hands since he was so used to holding a cigarette.. good luck. youre an amazing friend and person if you want to and are willing to help your friend quit smoking.

Smoking...what? Cigarettes, pot, the hooka? I've never smoked anything, but just curious to exactly which you were talking about.

Smoking is stupid. If you really want to relieve some stress, punch a kitten.

I smoke, and although my parents don't know, I am proud of it. It may sound odd because I am killing myself slowly but sometimes if I am stressed out instead of hurting myself I have smoke. I always told myself I wouldn't get addicted but too late, I am. As I guess your friend is too. If your friend is trying to quit, just be supportive of them, nomatter how melodramatic they may seem it's hard to stop and bagging them about it will only make it worse. Try getting them to do other things when they want a smoke, like popping bubble wrap or tying knots in a ribbon. <3

I've never smoked (I'm a dancer and yea allergic to smoke lol) but my friend did when we were 12/13. She quit b/c she too is a dancer and it got really hard with all that crap and we made her feel sh*tty about doing it. She ended up quiting by just throwing all the cigs out and stopping all together. We spent many nights on the phone with her while she would contemplate smoking another and we talked her outta it. She's been smoke free since then thank God. It's such a disgusting habit. Idk why anyone would WANT to do it. I guess you just need to get her to throw it all away and be there when she goes through the sh*t times. ~Serena~

Yea, smoking helps some people, it also hurts them in the long run but it can relieve stress. I've never tried it and I don't intend to. I don't need a cigarette to collect myself or relieve my stress. I excercise.

I smoke occasionally. So what if it's bad for you? I started smoking when I was 13 years old. I'm currently 16 years old, you do the math. But when you're a recovering cutter, plus other addictions, you tend to need a release to help you stay clean. Smoking does it for me.

Smoking is such a wonderful thing. Yes it's bad for you and yeah I'll probably die of lung cancer. But It's such a great outlet when there are no other less lethal LEGAL drugs. I started at 17 because i was working in a very fast paced cooks job, the thing was that we would work for an hour and then go outside for 10 min. and let everything balance out again, and cigs help us do that.

Well, I've never smoked and I don't intend to b/c I know it's bad for you. Your friend is having a hard time quitting because in cigarettes there is nicotine.(I'm assuming you mean cigarettes and not pot.) Nicotine is an extrememly addicitng substance. There are different ways of trying to quit smoking. -->She could try chewing gum whenever she craves a cigarette. -->She could try nicotine patches. -->Do her parents know about her problem. If not, they should be informed of her problem and seek professional help. Her parents wouldn't be half as mad if she informed them of her own problem and asked for help. I'd say more but I gotta go.
