NYC previously "recommended" that restaurants get rid of food that contains trans fat (the first step to outlaw). Now they are gearing up for a ban on trans fat across the city. This ban would include large fines and possibly shut downs. What do you think.

I think that the nannys are out of control. What ever happened to personal choice. We all know that bad foods are bad for you (and have known that for a long time), and you can always ask what is in a food or how it was made and if you don't get an answer and it is important to you, go somewhere else. I don't need the government to protect me from myself or from "Fran's Diner".

Question:
Should the government stop business from serving foods with trans fat?

Choices:
Yes, more regulation is needed.
Maybe, this is a public health issue that needs thought.
No, the government should stay out of this.

I don't think you guys understand the premise behind this law. It's not to prevent obesity in any way. Trans fats are not the sole blame for obesity in America, so the ban on trans fats has nothing to do with that.

Trans fats are under fire because they are highly seen as a great source of carcinogenic substances. If the fact is true, and there have been many studies which support this concept, the government is simply protecting us from cancer.

There are natural and unnatural trans fats, but the natural type is found in such minute quantities they are near harmless. The unnatural trans fats are artificially produced and are usually highly concentrated in certain foods. This is a great danger to your health- and it's a direct danger. Not like inhaling the city air of pollution (you can't stop breathing). You CAN, and the government enforces this, stop eating foods which contain these trans fats. And that's all the government wants.

Welcome to YN, Vegan. A word of advice, be very careful about bringing month old boards back to life. Also, there is a much more recent thread on this topic in "In the News."

In response to the whole quote in general, I partially do agree with this statement, it is a choice, but it is forced onto people. Commercials, smells, images, and those sorts.

I'm not an American but I think it sounds like a brilliant idea, the Government can make and break laws, they are the most influential and if they ban trans fat it's going to do a world of good.
It's not like people go to restaurants choosing to eat trans fat, and it's not like they're gonna miss it! I think anything for a healthier diet will prolongue our life and our style of life so why complain. Looks good to me!

And some fat people are born with genetic disorders and such that make them eat a lot more, digest a lot slower, and such. Some fat people dont chose to be fat.

Well, I kind of agree. The FDA has some pretty good policies in place now. For instance, no poison in foods. I'd like to know I'm eating something that won't kill me. (At least right away-ish.) Okay, I guess that too is debatable.

Then again, you haven't heard my entire pro-Epicurean Lifestyle address.

Are people that afraid to take responsibility that they're going to ban fatty foods? Maybe I should move to Sweden...

People aren't fat because of restaurants. Restaurants don't make you fat. They don't pull out this big "fat gun" and shoot you with it. You get fat because you choose (read: choose) to eat at the restaurant, and you choose to eat fatty foods. Nobody at the restaurant forces you to. You could very well order a salad and not get fat.

Duh.

(Note: when I say "you," I'm not talking to anyone here in particular. Figured I'd let that be known lest I get yelled at for no reason.)

Not at all, it's just another silly ploy to collect money from fast food chains.
