Allright, so I've been trying to get a job for the last....four months. Not a 9 to 5 office-like job, just a simple job like cashier or something.

And all the response I have gotten has been this: "We don't hire minors". I've asked in normal stores, grocery stores, fast food joints, drug stores, even a gym. They don't refuse me because I lack expirience, transportation, or skills, it's because of my fucking age.

Well, I'm not a 13 year old anymore. I drive, I have skills, and I sure to hell don't have a criminal record to worry about. Thus, I am utterly astounded at the fact that Subway is more willing to hire an HIV-positive high school dropout who skips works often instead of me, when I'd be a very good employee.

And while I do understand that are a lot of teenagers who are assholes, I'm not one of them. Hell, a lot of girls in my school who are broke don't get a job, they suck a few dicks here and there and get paid for that. I feel humialted that cheap herpes-ridden hookers have a salary and I don't.

And the legal age in PR to work is 16, so employers can't use that excuse against me. And they always fail to provide me a reason. I've begn to believe they think I lie about my age....hell I'm very short and skinny and could say I'm 13 if I wanted to (thank God I have a really deep voice that supposedly makes me sound older). I don't act whorish, I don't talk like an airheaded teenager, and I'm not mommy-dependent. I want a job to get money (duh) and to kill the excess of time I have in my hands now that school is over.

So, I was wondering if any of you have been through this shit, because I heard that in the US they aren't as bitchy about the age thing. Mind, I know this is a rant, but I need to get it off my chest before I officially freak out at the next "We don't hire minors".

Thanks Meagan, I might end up trying that, but I don't know for sure yet. I'm just explaining what happened when I started looking during my Spring Break.

Most places that are looking for part-time help are willing to hire me in an instant, because I am a very hard-worker, and most businesses in my hometown (and even a few in the "city") know me or my dad. But as soon as I come in looking for FT work, it's almost guaranteed to be a no because I'm "too young" for working all the time. HELLO?!

All you have to do to get around that is to pick up two PT jobs (or three, or four...) I have two part-time jobs right now and I'm lloking for another one that I can just keep for the summer. It works out well because you don't have to do any one thing all day, you are always in a different environment. (I once had three jobs at a time: Borders' bookseller, legal assistant, nanny...plus full-time student, that was interesting...)

I know what you mean, it does stink big time, but...you have to look at it from the employer's perspective. Minors are only allowed to work until a certain time, which can eliminate entire shifts from their availiblity. Also, they need extra breaks. So, while it stinks for you and all minors looking for work, it doesn't really fall under discrimination, just employers trying to take the easy way out. (Also, fyi, a place can't refuse to hire you because you are HIV + unless you are a medical person and you'd be working around open wounds, i think...)

Since you are responsible and have transportation, might I suggest finding a job as a nanny? I have a nanny job where I work like 12 hours a week and get paid $10/hr tax free. Not bad at all in my opinion. Especially when you consider the time I worked for Borders for $6.80 an hour before taxes. I was bringing home like $70 during an avarage week, and that includes the times when I would get so few hours that I was lucky to get $45. While baby-sitting seems like a flaky job, it really is great. During the summer you get to hang out outside, have snacks, play games...and you don't have to fight with your boss to give you more hours.

I gotta say it does suck celtic but I haven't really seen that most places seem to want to hire me but I got a job in a buisness (my dad's a partner with this guy)
