For me $30 is too much. I get my shoes second-hand for $5-$15 a pop. God, I love Value Village.

I agree. And even though I support non-sweatshop brands as it allows us to have an alternative, not all of us are made of money. For me, spending 30 dollars on shoes is alot. I am not about to shell out 57 when I could spend that on something more important.

Look, I don't know about the rest of the people here, but I'm cynical because I know what the world is like. Selling non-sweatshop clothing is not the way to "get rid" of the big companies like Nike. Nor will boycotting get you anywhere. In fact, there is nothing you can do to get these companies to stop with their policies, short of getting laws passed, which no one will go for anyways.

But *why* don't people care? It's one of the greatest injustices of the modern world that the global minority - the rich white folks, are exploiting the vast global majority - the poor black folks.
It's a generalisation but it's true and I don't see why people that come to this site, supposedly all about making a difference, are critical and unsupportive of companies that are actually *doing something* to fight against this enormous world-wide injustice.
I do not see why people can just shrug their shoulders in the face of such widespread, crippling poverty and back-breaking labour, and choose to exacerbate it instead of going for the fair option.
What's the point in apathy? It just stands in the way of progress.

Au contraire, my friend. When I buy shoes, I go for the look, not the brand. My last pair of shoes (now lacking major portions of the soles) was a Vans ripoff from Target. $20 or so. But they began falling apart a day after I put them on, so perhaps I should go for quality...

actually vans has shoes that look like this and i dont buy those either. i think any of the punk shoes look like they came out of garbage cans. I dont buy nike or any big name brand shoes anyway. i wear 88's. sorry but i dont think these shows will ever take down nike, becuase quite frankly i dont think many people care they are made in sweatshops. if they did they wouldnt buy the shoes.

I don't think Johnston and Murphy would ever make shoes that looked like that. If they did I wouldn't by their shoes anymore. charging 57 dollars for a shoe that looks like it came out of the garbage can is crazy. if you want punk looking shoes, the punks i know by shoes that are under 30 dollars and then just add stuff to them

Let me clear something up here-blackspots are grassroots capitalism, not the capitalism that you stumble across in the mall. I am so glad that someone brought up the Blackspot! I have a pair, and I absoulutely love them. They are comfy, natural, and were made by people who actually get payed, so I don't have to feel guilty about wearing them. I love them. Anywho, I am a loyal Adbusters reader and it nice to see that someone else is too. Oh, someone said that they were vegetarian-that's cool, I'm vegan.

quote: But why the whole shoe thing?
Well it's a start, isn't it? I mean they could have picked clothes, but generally one-product-at-a-time seems sensible. I think they're trying to start a Blackspot music label as well… although with downloadable music, who needs an 'antibrand' to combat the music industry? I don't understand that campaign yet… Anyway, they are looking to expand into other areas. Also I think Adbusters hate Nike in particular (because as well as using the cheapest of sweatshop labour, they charge high prices for their shoes, making particularly greedy profits). I think they've focused on shoes because the campaign is particularly aimed at Nike, one of the more prominent symbols of corporate dominance and corporate greed. -Pen P.S. I'm vegetarian too! I'll eat organic fish though, because I am weak.

But why the whole shoe thing? Why not ethically made socks, pants, shirts? Almost every product you use in a day isn't exactly ethically made. I'm not saying that makes it ok but rather, why shoes? I wear sweat shop shoes and really don't think much of it. And I'm against corporate injustice and exploitation, not just through shoes. Instead I don't eat meat and then don't support the highly unethical meat packing industry. -------- FreeCulture.org an international student movement for Free Speech, Free Software, and Free Culture
