i love poetry in other languages as well as in the english language. if people want to post poems in other languages just be kind enough to tell us what it is about. not a direct translation because...well, thats just not poetic Wink . Sorry that there aren't any accents.
here's one of my favorites.
this is by Victor Hugo
He lost his daughter who had recently married in a boating accident. This poem is about his depression and revisiting her grave site.

PS if anyone has any poetry in Spanish, i would really like to hear(see) it. thanks.

Actually, one of the best poems I have ever written is German and English. It is a haiku:

Sie trägt etwas, was
ich vor langer Zeit vergass
mein' letzte Seele

Translation:

She carries something
that I forgot long ago
my very last soul

Both are 5-7-5 and have a rhyme.

Translation:

February. Get ink, shed tears.
Write of it, sob your heart out, sing,
While torrential slush that roars
Burns in the blackness of the spring.

Go hire a buggy. For six grivnas,
Race through the noise of bells and wheels
To where the ink and all you grieving
Are muffled when the rain shower falls.

To where, like pears burnt black as charcoal,
A myriad rooks, plucked from the trees,
Fall down into the puddles, hurl
Dry sadness deep into the eyes.

Below, the wet black earth shows through,
With sudden cries the wind is pitted,
The more haphazard, the more true
The poetry that sobs its heart out.

This is in Spanish... translation:

No 13

That is your home,
a mockingbird sings on the window

You go in, you lean on it
and you see on the other side
the new world

You try to understand it
to love it

But a man arrives
grabs the mockingbird
laughs sarcastically

and kills it.

Je te deteste
parce que tu dit
tu m'adore, quand,
en realite,
tu ne m'aime pas.
Et plus jamais
je feindrai
le meme sentiment
quand
le sentiment est faux.

Esa es tu casa,
un ruiseñor canta en la ventana

Entras, te asomas a ella

¡Oh regalada llaga!
¡Oh mano blanda! ¡Oh toque delicado
que a vida eterna sabe
y toda deuda paga!
Matando, muerte en vida has trocado.

¡Oh lámparas de fuego
en cuyos resplandores
las profundas cavernas del sentido,
que estaba oscuro y ciego,
con estraños primores
color y luz dan junto a su querido!

¡Cuán manso y amoroso
recuerdas en mi seno
donde secretamente solo moras,
y en tu aspirar sabroso
de bien y gloria lleno,
cuán delicadamente me enamoras!

English translation:

There'll be noone in the house
Save for twilight. All alone,
Winter's day seen in the space that's
Made by curtains left undrawn.

Only flash-past of the wet white
Snowflake clusters, glimpsed and gone.
Only roofs and snows, and save for
Roofs and snow -- no one at home.

Once more, frost will trace its patterns,
I'll be haunted once again
By my last-year's melancholy,
By that other wintertime.

Once more I'll be troubled by an
Old, unexpiated shame,
And the icy firewood femine
Will press on the window-pane.

But the quiver of intrusion
Through those curtain folds will run
Measuring silence with your footsteps,
Like the future, in you'll come.

You'll appear there in the doorway
Wearing something white and plain,
Something in the very stuff from
Which the snowflakes too are sewn.

Mes vers fuiraient, doux et frêles,
Vers votre jardin si beau,
Si mes vers avaient des ailes,
Des ailes comme l'oiseau.

Ils voleraient, étincelles,
Vers votre foyer qui rit,
Si mes vers avaient des ailes,
Des ailes comme l'esprit.

Près de vous, pur et fidèles,
Ils accourraient nuit et jour,
Si mes vers avaient des ailes,
Des ailes comme l'amour.

I want to read poetry that I can actually understand.

Well, if you plan on learning a language, say Spanish or French (I won't mention Russian because you have to learn cyrillic first, and it's hard like hell so start something easier), start reading and listening to books or movies or CDs in that language. You'll actually learn very little, but at least you'll learn the pronounciations and your ears will be accustomed to it.
