Does music create emotion, or does it bring to the surface existing emotions?

the emotions that come back when you listen to a song are from your past either because of what you were doing when the song was on and were listing to it such as your listining to (for sake of an example) From Autumn To Ashes "Autumn's Monolouge" (since thats playing on my ipod atm) and your significant other leaves you (doesnt matter how or in what sense) every time you hear that song your gunna feel sad or how you felt when that person left
is it possible to fall in love if you have a broken heart?

hmm...I think it kind of depends on the type of music your listening to. But old emotions can resurface too. But hey!, I found out that if you listen to sad music when your sad...it goes away!! atleast for me it does.

Can it not do both?

In my opinoin, it depends on the type of music or what that particular song or type of music reminds you of. Some songs make me happy, or jumpy. The songs I listen to make me want to get up and sing or dance!

music can do anything. sometimes it can remind you of old feelings, and other times it can make you feel something you've never felt before. it depends on the music and the listener.
you never know who's giving the air that you might breathe in...

Hi guys... I think that it brings up old emotions that you've felt before and possibly forgotten. My advice: If you are going through a breakup, STAY AWAY FROM SIMPLE PLAN, KELLY CLARKSON, AND EVANESCENCE!!!!!! I learned the hard way... It don't help.

Music doesn't create emotion. It can bring old ones to the surface or make you feel an emotion stronger, but it can't make ones that aren't there. Take it from a musician.

I think music has the ability to create and resurface emotion. I believe it penetrates feeling. It awakens your senses.

Aren't music and emotion produced in the same part of the brain?

I think there is a tone to every song: positive, negative, etc. It doesn't necessarily create or surface emotions in the listener... instead I believe that these tone evokes feelings that people want. Rap appeals to people who want to feel "thug" and there's a rhymth to that music that makes people feel a certain way. For some, positive and other negative.

Ugh let me put it this way. The first time I heard "Smells Like Teen Spirit" I felt something I'd never felt before. Whether I just hadn't had the stimulus to feel it or whether the song created is a different matter. Great question, btw.

thats a damn good question.. i suppose the answer would depend on who u ask. the response would be different based on what kind of music and who you ask. music effects everyone in a different way so there is no general answer.
