We've covered books we love...now for those we hate. I've only disliked Hatchet by Gary Paulsen (had to read it for school) and the Lord of the Rings series by Tolkien.

The Bell Jar. It has a good plot line to it, but it's just depressing all around. Peace, Yuka

quote: I also really don't like For Whom the Bell Tolls. I hate the love story in it. I think it's chauvinist and shallow. The protagonist meets some girl, thinks she's pretty, decides he's in love without knowing much about her except what she looks like. Suddenly, she decides she wants to cook and clean for him and dedicate herself to making him happy, without knowing much about him except that he thinks she's hot.
Ironically, much like the story of Romeo and Juliet. The immediate shallow disregard of Rosaline, whom Romeo was almost suicidal about having lost, pissed me off too. Just because a chick's hot, the heroic male role ditches all other loves just based upon a new woman's physical appearance.

I vote Moby Dick is the most boring book ever written. I also really don't like For Whom the Bell Tolls. It annoyed me. survivngjersey, you hit the nail on the head. The protagonists really don't possess any redeeming or admirable qualities in my opinion. I really wasn't sad at all about him dying. Probably not the reaction Hemingway was going for.

Ca, you have to look beyond the words themselves. If you look into the book, there are so many hidden meanings in Old man and the sea. Santiago was a christ like character. The fish represented so many things. You just have to go beyond the literal meaning.

The Scarlet Letter. I hate reading anything in English I'm not familiar with. But I even thought the story was dumb. Thumbs down. And I don't want to say that I hate The Great Gatsby because it wasn't completely horrible. But, again, the story....just didn't like it.

Guilderstern and Rosencrantz are dead. It's kinda pointless, and there's not a whole lot that's going on..as far as excitement.

The worst book I have ever read is Galileo's Daughter by Dava Sobel. It's extremely boring and dry.

pretty much everything by hemmingway. i like most lost generation writers, but hemmingway's characters, especially in a farewell to arms, are all so shallow and heartless. that may have been what he was going for with the whole stoic "hemmingway hero" thing, but i'm not rooting for a single character in any of his novels.

Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen.
I thought I'd like it, but the plot was too drawn out, and nothing really happened.

I've got to agree with katalinacmnacha89, great expectations is just about the worst book ever written, and yes, I am including those crappy dollar-store cheesy romances in this as well.
