OK, a few weeks before MLK Day, we had to enter a local contest for a project. We had to write an essay or poem or draw a picture for it. I did a poem, and it won second place. My one problem with this is that the poem is really awful. I mean, I did it in one hour, and I would've never chosen it. So, I want to post it here and see what you guys think.
Here it is:
He was born into an awful time
Racial segregation should’ve been a crime
“For Whites Only” signs all over town
You were unfit to live if your skin was brown.
He grew up wishing that things would change
But for a long time that just seemed out of range
He thought, “Something must be done
Someone should take a stand, and I might be just the one.”
He led a boycott of segregated bus lines
Not afraid of jail or fines
He won a victory the following year
Blacks could ride the city bus without fear.
All through the South he led
Segregation appeared almost dead
At the capital he spoke
About having a Dream that should never be broke.
Although this man was truly great
All of his deeds somehow caused hate
During a trip to Tennessee,
He was shot and killed on a balcony.
How could this happen? Why? WHY?
It wasn’t this man’s time to die!
All he wanted to do was to help and save
He ended up in an early grave.
Despite all the man did to pave the way
Look at our world today
It may not seem that we discriminate
But deep down people still hold that same hate.
As we approach Martin Luther King Day
Let us remember this man’s way
To respect everyone, regardless of race or belief
If only it could happen, that would be a great relief.
"Why is it that we rejoice at a birth and grieve at a funeral? It is because we are not the person involved." -Mark Twain
