"It's better to give than to receive."

I've heard this phrase many times either at church or on some Christmas movie at one time or another.

What do you guys really think about this. Is it what some people would call it "Just a bunch of BS," because there's no way you'd give something away than receive it? Or do you think there is in fact some reward or sense of accomplishment in giving something away?

If the former, I respect your opinion. If the latter, than what are you giving away on this Holiday season? And if you are giving something away, then why isn't this done more through out the year and emphasized as much as on the Holidays?

Either way, please explain your reasons.

Thank you.

I personally think that this phrase is an excuse to inflate the ego. To say "Can you see that I've given and I'm a good person. Am I acceptable now in the eyes of others?" And this is because not many would honestly takes a step without first securing their own interests. You see it in businesses, allied countries and even on every day relationships.

A business will not give you a discount without first securing their profit from it. And of course this is rightfully so, because how could they they dream of becoming a powerful business if they give away all of their resources?

A country wont aid another in need, without first analyzing it's gains and loses. Take for example all of those poor countries in starvation and disease. You don't see other powerful countries stumbling over themselves to be the fist to help them. However, if there is something to gain from it, then they will all be waiting in line to do so. It takes a shocking amount of people and outrage to pressure representatives to take certain actions, like the ones needed in Darfur.

Only a masochist would enter a relationship where they know they will only suffer. People stay usually try to stay away from those who make them suffer or hurt their feelings. And isn't it just human to be selfish? Isn't it in our nature to look after your own self?

In the end, there are little actions that are genuine and pure of heart. Call it pessimistic, but it's true.
