quote: "Why prevent a man from chewing steak becuase a baby can't chew it"
was that to be taken seriously quote: I doubt your child would be reading Tropic of Cancer or Ulysses at an elementary age...
thats not what i meant....some childrens books are sending messages that i dont think are appropriate for MY children.... what i may find inapropriate another parent may find perfectly okay (or vice versa), but as parents i think we should have some say. that is why i said parents should have the say in this and not the school boards/gov. etc.....

"Why prevent a man from chewing steak becuase a baby can't chew it" Banned books kick butt! I say read them all. My favorite? Fahrenheit 451. Excellent book. I recommend it to all!
Banned books are the green apples in the red bushel. Too sour for some, yet the most interesting

Ok I didn't read the book, but I did see the movie. I got no inclination that it promoted drugs. Weird...the lengths people go to when stricken with boredom.

not when you are looking out for the best intrests of your child, there are just some concepts i dont want my child exposed to at an elementary age.....i know eventually they will be exposed, but not when they are to young to handle it. here is an example of them taking censorship too far.... "peter peter pumpkin eater, had a wife and couldnt keep her, he put in in a pumpkin shell and there he kept her very well" some might argue this is sending the message that a woman should have no independance......i say it is a cute nursery rhyme.

any kind of book banning or censorship is just wrong... parents should have a say, but they shouldn't be extremely harsh when it comes to what children read....

when it comes to my children and what they read, i do think i should have some say...when they are a bit older and able to handle "grown up" concepts then it will be a different story. but i do feel they are taking it a little to far in some cases, i would rather the parent have a say in what their child reads, not the school board...etc

I just want to know your opionions on Book Banning, censorship, and related stuff. Did you know that James and The Giant Peach was banned because people believed that it promoted drugs?

i don't think that any book should be bannded, because it is an expression of free speach. But I do feel that books should have a rating system much like the system that are on video tapes. -Tabb

Banning books is the work of ignorant, scared people who want to keep their worlds safe and complacent. they are afraid of other people having different views and morals than they do, and therefore try to prevent others from reading books that might actually make those other people develop some somehow radicaly different ideas.. We as human beings should be free to do what we want, eat what we want, go where we want, read what we want. As logn as we are willing to accept the consequences of our actions, whether they be good or bad, we should not be kept from things that some body else believes is detrimental to our well-being. Yes, when we are young we are not psychologically mature enough to handle certain things. Therefore, those who are our caretakers when we are this young should shield us from these experiences. However, if some one is truly interested in reading a book, no matter how gruesome or "innapropriate" it might be, that person has the right to read that book.
