I would bet money it is a plublicity stunt... They must be running out of things to talk about in interviews. To be honest he was the last character I would have thought was gay.

This serves absolutely no point. It doesn't add anything to the plot, it doesn't give any sort of deeper understanding of the novel, and she won't even sell any more books with it, seeing as how she's already broken the time-space continuum of book-selling. It's almost like she only added this to make the crazy conservative whackjobs who hate her novels already even more irate.
