A friend of mine told me about Kierkegaard. I've been meaning to read something of his, but I never can seem to find it at the library . Any recommendations as to what I should read first, should I ever locate anything by him?

ok, Nietzche was a nazi. IF you're going to have a thing for nazi philosophers you should read Hiedegger and think about ontology, much more enjoyable.

Its not so much summing up as it is writing your opinion of these philosophers. I just want to know some opinions other than the academics. I don't care about it if its not your opinion.

You can't really "sum up" a philosopher. Well, actually you can, but I'm not going to because it would take way too much effort, I don't know nearly everything about him, and its already been done. click here

would any one be interested in summarizing ( a bit) what nietzsche is about to me? honestly, i know next to nothing about him or his work, but he seems like one of those people that i should just "know about" (a vaguely shallow reason), you know?

Kierkegaard.... its much to late to be thinking about him. Besides, is Nietzsche not enough? Dammit its so hard to please people these days.

quote: Hegel said it first.
Well, he said: "It is the painful feeling that God Himself is dead." And I think what he was trying to convey was that the object of God was dead, like the Old Testament God who was very real outside of humanity. And now we need to embrace God as something that is inside of us and not something that interferes with our lives in obvious ways. And then Nietzsche, who was an atheist, didn't even believe in the actual "object" of God. He just believed that the idea of God was dying because of the sudden change in Western culture and the rejection of Christian values. Nietzsche isn't my favorite either, but you have to give him credit...he had some pretty interesting perspectives before he went insane. Then again, I'm sure his perspectives were even more interesting when he was insane, but I don't know much about that.

quote: uy. I like his really famous quote "God is dead."
Hegel said it first. And Nietzsche went insane. Not my favourite philosopher.

Ah, Nietzsche...he is a very fascinating guy. I like his really famous quote "God is dead." It really makes you think, like what he meant by that. If I can remember from my freshman philosophy class, he said that in reference to the Western world. That we have killed the "idea" of God and by giving up the Christian faith, then we also give up the reason for Christian morality. Its really interesting when you think about it. He does have a point, with America, this country has been continuously been lowering its "Christian" values as time goes on and not to mention the separation of Church and State. Not everybody believes in Christianity, so does that mean our country has no right to institute Christian morality and values onto our laws anymore? It gives you something to ponder...
