Why did Poe Chose to write About Strange Characters in Far Away imaginary times and Places?

Writing and reading takes you beyond your wildest imaginations. For Edgar Allen Poe writing was his profession, and his ticket to a better “reality”. Edgar’s life was inexpressible, everyone he ever knew and ever loved left him for a different time and place. So as he went on in life so did his writing.
When the time comes when you’d rather face fiction than the truth, it’s distressing, apparently if you lived like Poe did, I wouldn’t blame you. To live like Poe did, what you would need to survive is your intelligence, but even with that there’s no guarantee, you’ll succeed, there’s no guarantee you’ll right all his wrongs, there’s no guarantee that you’ll see life the way it should be seen, beautiful and filled with grace. I believe Poe had an escape route out of this place,, out of this balloon we call life. It’s like every time something goes wrong air leaks out, every time we succeed it expands, gives us more air to breath. His escape route led to a place that you would think it was easier for him, read his work, follow the arrows and find a black hole, a crack in time, where everything stops and makes way for you and your enemy, pain. By the last paragraph, the last line, the last stanza, his pain becomes your pain. His burdens are your burdens; the weight of the world on his shoulders becomes the weight on your shoulders.
Writing and reading takes you beyond your wildest imaginations. For Poe his life wasn’t here in this place we call life, his life was in his writing, in his wildest imaginations.

The best Edgar Allan Poe poem is The Sleeper. If you decide to read it, read it out loud, it makes it even more beautiful.

The Sleeper

At midnight, in the month of June,
I stand beneath the mystic moon.
An opiate vapor, dewy, dim,
Exhales from out her golden rim,
And, softly dripping, drop by drop,
Upon the quiet mountain top,
Steals drowsily and musically
Into the universal valley
The rosemary nods upon the grave;
The lily lolls upon the wave;
Wrapping the fog about its breast,
The ruin molders into rest;
Looking like Lethe, see! the lake
A conscious slumber seems to take,
And would not, for the world, awake.
All beauty sleeps!-and lo! where lies
Her casement open to the skies
Irene, with her Destinies!

O, lady bright! can it be right-
This window open to the night?
The wanton airs, from the tree-top,
Laughingly through the lattice drop-
The bodiless airs, a wizard rout,
Flit through thy chamber in and out,
And wave the curtain canopy
So fitfully- so fearfully-
Above the closed and fringed lid
'Neath which they slumb'ring soul lies hid,
That, o'er the floor and down the wall,
Like ghosts the shadows rise and fall!
Oh, lady dear, hast thou no fear?
Why and what art thou dreaming here?
Sure thou art come O'er far-off seas,
A wonder to these garden trees!
Strange thy pallor! strange thy dress,
Strange, above all, thy length of tress,
And this all solemn silentness!

The lady sleeps! Oh, may her sleep,
Which is enduring, so be deep!
Heaven have her in its sacred keep!
This chamber changed for one more holy,
This bed for one more melocholy,
I pray to God that she may lie
Forever with unopened eye,
While the pale sheeted ghosts go by!

My love, she sleeps! Oh, may her sleep
As it is lasting, so be deep!
Soft may the worms about her creep!
Far in the foest, dim and old,
For her may some tall vault unfold_
Some vault that oft has flung its black
And winged panels fluttering back,
Triumphant, o'er the crested palls,
Of her grand family funerals-
Some sepulchre, remote, alone,
Against whose portal she hath thrown,
In childhood, many an idle stone-
Some tomb from out whose sounding door
She ne'er shall force an echo more,
Thrilling to think, poor child of sin!
It was the dead who groaned within.

THE END

P.S.- the best EAP short story is Ligeia.

Yes, he is. It's a real shame that people can mix up something that simple.

Poe is spinning in his grave when he heard the title of this post.

Barkid, aren't you confusing Hitchcock with Poe?

Edgar Allen Poe's "the birds" in black and white is by far one of the scariest movies I have ever seen.

As long as you agree not to delve into your list, then I as well will let my stockpile be.

I haven't read the Emily Dickinson one, but I have read the other one (which name requires much less effort than this to type but this is much more fun).
I have a large list of favourite poems. Will not go into it, though.

I also like A Noiseless, Patient Spider by Walt, and 22 by Emily Dickinson. Emily is another of my favorite poets.

Tis my favourite poem. Second to it woud probably be Blow Bugle Blow by Alfred, Lord Tennyson.

Walt Whitman, is, inarguably, the best poet of all time. I am not simply agreeing with WaveMaster, it is a fact. And yes, O Captain! is a wonderful poem.

No no.

We aaaalll know Walt Witman is the best poet ever. Just look at this piece of art! (by the way, the GREATEST poem on the face of the earth, no contest, none)

O Captain! My Captain!

O Captain! my Captain! our fearful trip is done,
The ship has wathered every rack, the prize we sought is won,
The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring;
But O heart! heart! heart!
O the bleeding drops of red,
Where on the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead

O Captain! my Captain! rise up and hear the bells,
Rise up--for you the flag is flung--for you the bugle trills,
For you boquets and ribbon'd wreaths--for you the shores a-crowding,
For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning;
Here Captain! dear father!
This arm beneath your head!
It is some dream that on the deck,
You've fallen cold and dead.

My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still,
My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will,
The ship is anchor'd safe and sound, its voyage closed and done,
From fearful trip the victor ship comes in with object won;
Exult O shores, and ring O bells!
But I with mournful tread,
Walk the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.

Anything that is in "A Good Man is Hard to Find" collection. Don't worry, the title really has nothing to do with the stories, they're awesome, you'll enjoy them.
