I dunno how much of a stretch it is to put this question in this category...but I guess it's philosophy.

I recently had a couple discussions with two friends on the subject of depth, and both of these friends had very different ideas.

The first suggested that a person's depth was determined solely on how much this person had suffered in their life. Someone who had experienced some intense trauma would be more deep than someone who had been lucky enough not to.

When I brought this idea up with another friend, we both agreed that the ideas brought up before were a little ridiculous. I believe that a person's personal suffering absolutely determines parts of their personality, and the way they relate to people. However, I would not say that a person's experiences of their past necessarily determine "depth" if that's even a legitimate concept.

So I decided to ask a few questions:

What is depth?
What exactly determines a person's depth?
How does personal trauma effect a person?

I don't doubt that a person's "depth" is somewhat based on experience. But entirely? Just because a person has been fortunate enough to not experience horrible pain in their life doesn't necessarily mean that they do not understand people who have.

Right?

Depth, iamastar, not death. I don't blame you though, I was confused when I first saw the name of this thread.

keatong, I'm pretty sure a person's depth is determined by what they've been through in life. For instance, a rich dude who's never been outside his little sheltered gold-plated world won't have the same depth of personality as a six year old kid who witnessed his family murdered in front of his eyes. That's just my take on it.

The more you know, the less you don't know.

I think that death is the passing of one's soul, heart, and spirit to another side whether it be Heaven or Hell or whatever it may be. I think what determines one's death is some greater power knowing that it is that one person's time to exit. I aslo think that personal trauma effects a person in how they interact with people and the kind of relationships they keep with people.

I have not yet reached my goal, and I am not perfect. But Christ has taken hold of me. So I keep on running and struggling to take hold of the prize. My friends, I don't feel that I have already arrived. But I forget what is behind, and I struggle for wha
