you said you liked Blood and Chocolate you should read the Silver Kiss. It's by the same author and it's really good.

I rather liked in-class books.. Great Gatsby, A Seperate Peace, Winter of Our Discontent, Metamorphosis...
Outside of class.. I enjoyed most Melville novels (Billy Budd threw me off, though), and Catcher in the Rye.

One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich is good. I loved a lot of quotes from Their eyes were watching god. Gemini's right, I've read every bokk they've made us read for school, the first was Huckleberry Finn, BLECH! and the second was the GreatGatsby, which was slow, plot less and point less. it wasn't even entertaining. If you want something a little less low brow than what everyone is suggesting, I would say read Battle Royale, it's Japanese, (translated) and a little difficult to get your hands on because of the content. The whole thing is about a Jr. High School class from some imaginary Fascist nation that are taken to this island and forced to kill each other until there is only one student left standing. Grotesque and gruesome, yet it does a good job exploring what it means to be human, trust, and what Fascism is capable of.

Rito, maybe your friend didn't like it because the vocabulary is slightery different than most books. Or he just doesn't like politcs.. I would take some time to read it if I were you, though.

And I didn't like The Great Gatsby much. I found it dull and uninteresting.

Kurt Vonnegut- all the guys at my school love him

omg i want to read 1984 so bad... i hear it is a great comparision to Brave New World which i am reading right now (and hella hella love... one more: hella)

i personally like carl sagan. writes good nonfiction but you prob want fiction. he wrote contact (fic) which is my fav book tho.
it is pretty different from the movie.

if you aren't into sci fi then try either The Great Gatsby (love triangle set in the 20s) or Odessy (mythology by homer)

god... now i feel like i need to read more BNW!!! hehe

(PS i hate reading if that means anything, so all these books are pretty fun)

Actually, I just got finished reading 1984 by Orwell, and it was a surprisingly good book. I really enjoyed reading it, and I'm a harsh literary critic.

"Jane Eyre" by Charlotte Bronte
"1984" by George Orwell
"Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley
"I Capture The Castle" by Dodie Smith

Sylvia Plath's poetry also - "Ariel" is a good volume. Haven't yet read her book "The Bell Jar" but I'm about to.

Put your nose in a book that was written by a reknown author from the past, such as:

Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury (Love this one!)
Frankenstein, Mary Shelley (The REAL one)
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Mark Twain (Easy to read because you've probably already seen the movie)
Jane Eyre, Charlotte Bronte
Great Expectations, Charles Dickens

Well, that's all I can think of presently for your grade level. I read Farenheit 451, Frankenstein, and Great Expectations my freshman year. So it should round out for your level of difficulty and interest. Believe me, you may think that these are boring books... but they're not!! Trust me on this one. Wink

Harlan Ellison, Kurt Vonnegut,

Hell yes. I just finished "Dangerous Visions", not exactly straight Ellison but one of the best books i have ever read. I've always heard good things about Heinlein, but never got around too reading his stuff.

Also, Kim Stanley Robinson, check him out.
