In the traditional sense at least these days biblophiles like my self are the outliers of society with the main stream very rarely reading at all or using things like "cliff notes" or "internet summerys" or of course watching the movie. things like this and of course the ever present television is killing the book. The Death of books is a sad thing the elegant binding and pages replaced by an actor or a cold computer screen. But I say NO! to this travesty my fellow readers I beesch you read the book then see the movie, when assiged a book to read for class read the it! do not use the cliff notes version of the title, And do not let your self fall in to the mind numbing trap of televison. Read my friends Read from books and enjoy!

On a serious note, this accusation of dying literature is made all the time. Hemmingway was accused of being too simplistic in his style. I am guilty of it, I say all the time that Da Vinci code is written for the folks who stopped practicing their 'reedin' after the second grade. which reminds me of Steinbeck, who makes me sick with his love of spelling dialog phoneticaly...

My point: it's all relative.

But have the masses at large ever really appreciated literature? I highly doubt that the farmers and industrial workers of Europe or America ever read The Republic, The Iliad, The Divine Comedy, or The Canterbury Tales on thier off time. Those books are mainly the porogative of the wealthy.

I am majoring in English, that should show my commitment to literature.

I have to read Sparknotes for the novels we read in my AP english class because I have no time to get it read otherwise. But I love lit. just as much as the next person so I plan to eventually read the actual books.....I just don't have the time right now, sadly.
