Just a question though, what destiny do you think you've found?

Dunno about the US but in europe there are tons of programs that allow you to travel to empoverished regions to help NGO's work on their projects there. Usually the bargain is you pay for your flight costs and they give you lodging and food while there. A good friend of mine is traveling to nepal this sumer for a full month to help build a school in a mountain region. There are also programs in India, and many parts of subsaharian Africa. If you can afford the travel costs it's a great chance to get some first hand experience in a NGO while actually working on a cause you're interested in.

I agree. I think going to college and getting some sort of 4 year degree would do the most for your non-profit ambitions. It would give you a bit more credibility when seeking support for your cause.

My ideas for you are to: 1. Put your dream of a non-profit organization on hold until after college, and 2. Learn as much about people and the world while in college. I suggest you look into AmeriCorps, and join clubs at your school like the Environmental Club and Amnesty International, as a way to join with others who are passionate about changing and informing the world. That way, you will get perspectives, as well as potential members and experience.

Well, to tell you the truth, it is not just one simple thing. Let me start at the beginning: Last year, at the beginning of my senior year of high school I started an organization HOPE (Helping Other People Everywhere). We had an amazing time. We helped with the special needs kids at my school, raised money for Muscular Dystrophy Association, and put knowledge into other people's heads about everything from national debt to the hazards of the HPV vaccine. Not to mention we discussed theories about this country's increasing liberalism, science versus/with religions, and the potential downfall of our country due to loose borders(see events in history, ie-Roman empire downfall.) But now, I have graduated. Most of the kids that I worked with were in lower grades, so they will continue on with it, but I won't, at least not as a student. So, I am 'thrown out into the real world' with every intention of starting a nonprofit organization, and building it up so that we can eventually go to Africa and assist over there, after we fix problems in the US first.(I believe, who the heck are we to go into another country and tell them what's right from wrong? um, sorry it's my soap box) However there are quite a couple of problems: 1) The money: creating a nonprofit organization is a business risk, and seeing how I am about to be a freshmen in college, broke will be my middle name. 2) People: In the high school environment, I was very comfortable, because I had people supporting me. Now, the only ones behind me are going off across the country to college, have full time jobs, or my parents who think that this isn't as important as school. Basically I need a network of people I can count on. Of those two, I think the biggest one is the people. I want to have HOPE address all kinds of issues, and to be set up kind of like the government. (ie-"Insert fancy position name" of Poverty, "Position name" of Environmental Concerns, "Position name" of Military Concerns, etc.) But I don't want to just have someone say "Sure I'll do this for you Kate, just because you are a great friend," and then only do it for a short period of time, and then quit. I want someone who says, "I want to do this with you because I care so passionately about...." and stays with that passion for most of their lives. And so, I came here to ask for advice, opinions, criticisms, and possibly some passionate people that can help me with ideas about their own causes. So, I guess the answer to your question is simple, and unexpectedly harder than anything else: to help the world.

Yes. And we all know, if I were to drop my health insurance, the next day something terrible would happen and I would be in debt for years paying it off. I'm going to look for a student plan I can switch to after I'm off Accutane. (I need to be on the plan I'm on now while on Accutane because there's a chance my plan will cover it, and no way a student plan will.)

Hey Guys, I had a couple of questions, and since this board is for whatever, and it is frequently visited; I decided to give it a shot. *Only one request, no scoffing, please* So, here it goes: Have anyone ever been 'called' to do something? For example, known that whatever you you were trying to do was the reason that you were put on this world? That you feel SO strongly about it, SO passionate, that it consumes your thoughts, and you have every emotional and moral reason to go after your ambition. If one was so inclined, one would call it destiny. I do believe I have stumbled across mine own. And with such thoughts, I have created some potential wonderful plans for the future. And, quite possibly, plans that could/would alter at least a tiny bit of history for the better. (And not just the politically motivated better, but the real, every day better.) But what if there were quite a few logical reasons why one shouldn't follow this destiny. Say like, endangering life (my own, no one else's), sacrificing close relationships, having to choose the one big passion over tinier passions/wants, and doing all of this while tempting failure. What would one choose? You see, that is my dilemma. Should I risk failure for the chance to follow my passion? Or, take a grasp at the fact that humankind can become something more than it already is?

So my dad renewed our health insurance today. Even though I'm a full-time student who lives at home, they put me on as an individual, not as part of the family. $1,200 for a year of health insurance for me. It's absolutely insane. It's now costing me $50 more a month paid to my mom to cover half of my health insurance because I felt insanely guilty about the costs I'm incurring.
